Recommend me an intermediate acoustic drum kit

Looking at getting an intermediate acoustic drum kit.

Anybody have any experience of "Basix" kits - specifically the Danny Gottleib Signature kit?

Or perhaps a Tama Superstar?

Don't really want to spend a lot on it as it will be used for a handful of gigs a year in small rooms etc.

Cheers!

Mapex are pretty decent, have read very good things even about their lower end stuff. The music society at my uni have just brought an M Birch kit and it is very nice, plus came with a free 10" tom with arm and clamp. Remo heads as standard and hardware seemed pretty decent too.

I have a Tama Superstar Custom, and i must say its fantastic, virtually a starclassic in design and hardware, except they have basswood inner and birch outer!

Re: Recommend me an intermediate acoustic drum kit

i managed to pick up a great looking birch one for about £200 on ebay, sounds like a kit worth literaly 5-10 times that. I believe the shells are manufactured by DW but in the far east to make them a shitload cheaper.

sure the cheapo chinese metalware on the shells doesnt look great, but they literally sound awesome, kicks the arse of my mapex pro m... and my yamaha...

my advice... buy one!

I third it. PDP Maple are nice. The only thing that I did not like was the snare so that got changed after a year. Apparently the PDP kit sounds awesome with better heads.

I love Mapex toms though, oh and Yamaha bass drums

Re: Recommend me an intermediate acoustic drum kit

yeh the snares arnt great.. i have a few and one custom one so i use those..

if you like a rock sound get evans heads

Genera G2 coated for toms top with G1 clear for reso side will give you a nice fat sound....

evans eq3 on the kick will sort out a nice punchy wound without being tooo clicky... good for allround... i have the birch and it sounds AWEsome set up like this...

I probably would have chosen the birch as it has far more punch without being bright as long as the heads are changed.

I bought an Ahead snare with a trick strainer, it really sings, loud and fat with plenty of overtones. Bit scary when I first tuned it, sounded like it was amplified.
