Suggest me a new band...I'm quite frankly bored by music!

Having been such a massive music fan years and having acquired a BIG music collection over the year, on a recent cull of CDs, it made me realise how little new music I listen to and how irregularly I buy anything new.

I prefer stuff that's a bit dark, avant garde, twisting and original...

I really liked the last Portishead LP and I'm big fan of bands like Chromatics, Joy Division, Goblin, Vaz, Year Future, Lightning Bolt, Beck...

can anyone recommend anything new to me that I might like...

Cheers!

Listen to Mansun again! Couple of others too which you might not have come across but are very good indeed!

Legacy: The Best of Mansun

Carnavas by Silversun Pickups

Anything by Jimmy Eat World but start with Clarity and Bleed American

Good News For People Who Hate Bad News by Modest Mouse

Re: Suggest me a new band...I'm quite frankly bored by music!

Haha, well, so far, the only one I haven't heard of/got an album by is Silversun Pickups - so I will check them out...

Mansun were awesome... well, Six was anyway - a very underrated album. That album would be one of my favs ever.

Jimmy Eat World have never really done it for me - they aren't bad by any means but neither do I rate them. Lots of people love them and I can understand that though.

Modest Mouse is another band I have at least one album by but have never given much attention to - I really should go back and listen to them...

And, I can't remember which Mr Bungle album I have on LP but I loved the crazy 'circusness' of it...

Thanks guys....

Christ i'll have to try harder...

Silversun Pickups to me are like a cross between Curve and The Breeders. Nothing really sounds similar to them but they know a decent melody that's for sure!

For the Mansun fans - try and find the 3 disc Kleptomania album. I got it off amazon a while back. Its got rarities, b side and ep tracks and the never released 4th album. Loads of great stuff on there.

How about Porcupine Tree - Fear of a blank planet
There is a band called '3' which impressed the hell out of me when I saw them live last year.

Strange... I find that live shows can make or break a band for me, personally... this band is certainly the best I ever saw live... the video sounds a bit of a mess, but if you're familiar with Lightning Bolt, you'll probably appreciate it... feel free to post some vids up guys... helps me with my request and it's good to share!

Have you tried anything by The Von Bondies? I'm just going through my most listened to stuff at the moment. It's all over the place, Robert Palmer, Roxy Music, The Divine Comedy, They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds Five...

Try The Horrors. The new album has got a lot of Joy Division influence with some krautrock and shoegazer sounds thrown in.

Also, sign up to last.fm. Totally changed the way I listen to music and I've found dozens of new bands, many of which I now absolutely love, through it.

Re: Suggest me a new band...I'm quite frankly bored by music!

Thanks to the joys of the internet, checking out new music has never been easier

Maybe try

Deus - strange Belgian indie rock, a great great band.
Murder by Death - alt bluesy/country indie with great vocals
Interpol: well, you said you like Joy Division
Eels: if you don't like them, you are, quite frankly, dead inside.
Flaming Lips: psychedelic indie weirdos that never fail to entertain
Morphine: defunct bluesy jazzy indie trio

Re: Suggest me a new band...I'm quite frankly bored by music!

Maybe you need some metal in your life? Here are a few worth trying:

Heaven and Hell, The Devil You Know (new release).
Metallica, Master of Puppets.
Slayer, Reign in Blood.
Bruce Dickinson, Chemical Wedding.

I find when bored with music, that listening to something completely different often renews my interest.

Re: Suggest me a new band...I'm quite frankly bored by music!

Hey Knucky... well, trust me, I like heavy stuff! But I agree with you, a change of genre is always good, I just need to be pointed in a new, refreshing direction... my tastes certainly vary... I like everything from hip hop to power violence, punk to indie, drum n bass to italo disco, you get the picture... love a bit of Slayer and early Metallica - keep meaning to dig out my Hirax and DRI stuff - that is fantastic old skool Thrash!

gingerninja72 - a few suggestions there I will have to follow up... quite like Interpol, have a couple of their albums and the Eels are definately good as well... Flaming Lips are twee but I quite like them! The others I will need to have a look at - the name Deus is certainly familiar but I don't know any of the stuff... again with Murder By Death and Morphine...

Have a few LPs by Echo and the Bunnymen but the Last Fm idea is good, I keep meaning to join and never get around to it! As for the Horrors, quite enjoyed the first LP but didn't even realise they had a new one out!! There's something to have a listen to!

Isis are a mixed bag for me... loved bits of Oceanic and have a couple of their other releases... but they really seemed to go backwards in their progression for me...!

Cheers guys... keep em coming! I will try and give some of these suggestions a listen when I get the opportunity!

Their 2nd album was released a couple of weeks ago...just letting it grow on me at the moment, it's very good but I think their 1st album Carnavas shades it by a whisker!

Well these aren't all new but I think you would like Arcade Fire, Glasvegas, Patrick Wolf- All a bit off the normal path. And I'd highly recommend Alec Empire's album 'Golden Foretaste of Heaven'- Brooding, dark and lots of bleeps- I love it.

Patrick Wolf is pretty good, he was amazing when I saw him live... and I quite like Arcade Fire but I have to say... I really don't like Glasvegas...

I think I have an Alec Empire LP somewhere - God, perhaps I don't need anything new, just need to catch up on what I already have! Love a bit of Atari Teenage Riot when I'm in an upbeat kind of mood!

I think I have an Alec Empire LP somewhere - God, perhaps I don't need anything new, just need to catch up on what I already have! Love a bit of Atari Teenage Riot when I'm in an upbeat kind of mood!
There you go, rediscover the old stuff in your collection! Gotta love Atari Tenage Riot, blows the cobwebs out on the train. Golden foretaste of heaven is a lot less intense, much easier to listen to and one of my fave albums of last year. In fact after writing that post I listened to it on the journey home. Marvellous stuff!
