Talking Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Hi all,

There's a method to my madness!

I've got Guitar Hero: Metallica on pre order and seeing as I've never heard a Metallica song (that I know of anyway!), I thought it might be a good idea to get to know some of their stuff!

So what I'd like is a recommendation of a good CD for me to get to listen to beforehand.

Cheers.

+1 for the black album

S&M may be a good one as well - may ease you in a bit as i trust you're not a metal head!!

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

I've just looked at a tracklist from that game and it covers most of the albums (5 from the black album, 6 from master of puppets, 4 from Ride the lightning.....)

It depends on what style you want really. 'Metallica' (aka 'the black album' or 'smell the glove') has fairly short songs with slower and catchy riffs ('Enter Sandman' being the best known), Ride the Lightning is faster and has a more raw 'thrashy' sound.

My personal favourite is 'Master of Puppets' as it is simply sublime.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

I'm guessing your not into Metal (thrash or rock) so i'd go with the lighter but better albums which would be The Black Album 1st & then into ...And Justice for All.
The Main Tracks your looking at are :-
Metallica (Or the Black Album as most call it)
Enter Sandman
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
Wherever i May Roam
The Unforgiven
...And Justice For All
Blackend
...And Justice For All
One
Haverster Of Sorrow

Thumbs up Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Thanks gang.

No, I'm not a particularly big metal/thrash fan but I'm always open to new (or old in Metallica's case!) listening ideas.

I think I'll get the Black album and take it from there.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Master of Puppets is also good, even if a bit more thrashy than the Black album. This recording seems a bit compressed on CD to my ears, may bother you, maybe not.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Master of Puppets.

The Black Album is it's well behaved twin brother. Polished and well recorded but it lacks the feel of MOP which has a more inventive edge IMO. Either are good.

Ride the Lightning should be considered. Both MOP and RTL featured Cliff Burton who contributed to a style that was slightly wistful and melodic at the same time.

Later albums such as the Black Album substituted the classical approach by Michael Kaman, it is rumoured he had a greater part to play in the process than has been admitted.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Buy all the albums in chronological order minus St Anger and Death Magnetic.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Sorry for sounding like a terrible grump, but The Black album was the point at which Metallica started going downhill rapidly. My advice? Get (in this order) Master of Puppets, Kill Em' All, Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All. Fact is, they have never bettered Master of Puppets - it is rightly regarded by Thrash fans (along with Slayer's Reign in Blood) as a landmark album.
