Talking Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Hi all,

There's a method to my madness!

I've got Guitar Hero: Metallica on pre order and seeing as I've never heard a Metallica song (that I know of anyway!), I thought it might be a good idea to get to know some of their stuff!

So what I'd like is a recommendation of a good CD for me to get to listen to beforehand.

Cheers.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

I've just looked at a tracklist from that game and it covers most of the albums (5 from the black album, 6 from master of puppets, 4 from Ride the lightning.....)

It depends on what style you want really. 'Metallica' (aka 'the black album' or 'smell the glove') has fairly short songs with slower and catchy riffs ('Enter Sandman' being the best known), Ride the Lightning is faster and has a more raw 'thrashy' sound.

My personal favourite is 'Master of Puppets' as it is simply sublime.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

I'm guessing your not into Metal (thrash or rock) so i'd go with the lighter but better albums which would be The Black Album 1st & then into ...And Justice for All.
The Main Tracks your looking at are :-
Metallica (Or the Black Album as most call it)
Enter Sandman
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
Wherever i May Roam
The Unforgiven
...And Justice For All
Blackend
...And Justice For All
One
Haverster Of Sorrow

Thumbs up Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Thanks gang.

No, I'm not a particularly big metal/thrash fan but I'm always open to new (or old in Metallica's case!) listening ideas.

I think I'll get the Black album and take it from there.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Master of Puppets is also good, even if a bit more thrashy than the Black album. This recording seems a bit compressed on CD to my ears, may bother you, maybe not.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Master of Puppets.

The Black Album is it's well behaved twin brother. Polished and well recorded but it lacks the feel of MOP which has a more inventive edge IMO. Either are good.

Ride the Lightning should be considered. Both MOP and RTL featured Cliff Burton who contributed to a style that was slightly wistful and melodic at the same time.

Later albums such as the Black Album substituted the classical approach by Michael Kaman, it is rumoured he had a greater part to play in the process than has been admitted.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Sorry for sounding like a terrible grump, but The Black album was the point at which Metallica started going downhill rapidly. My advice? Get (in this order) Master of Puppets, Kill Em' All, Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All. Fact is, they have never bettered Master of Puppets - it is rightly regarded by Thrash fans (along with Slayer's Reign in Blood) as a landmark album.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Wow..Kill 'Em All isn't getting a lot of votes .

If only for "The Four Horsemen" it should be top of the list...but it wasn't just Four Horsemen was it? No, it also has 5 other tracks worthy of classic status and 4 [OK...3] others of great quality.

Ride the Lightning comes second to the mighty onslaught of Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets a lowly third.

Everything after is pop. [Some good pop, some very much overblown pretentious uptheirownass pop].

Just my humble opinion .

Mind you, they are still a band you must see before you die.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

Pretty much every album with the exceptions of Load and Reload and the awful St Anger.

S&M is a great album the DVD is awesome. As well as Live **** Binge and Purge. Cunning Stunts is also a great DVD. I love metallica seen tyem 5 times so far with numbers 6 and seven coming up in November in New York at madison square gardens i can't wait.

Im so looking forward to GH:Metallica even though i am so crap at it.

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

problem is Kill em' All, Ride the Lightning, Master Of Puppets & bits off ...And Justice for all are "THRASH" Albums.
And i really think you have to be into thrash to like them, he's best off seeing the more commercial side of metallica side 1st which has to be the black album. I mean, that was the album where your sister who was a duran duran fan would ask you if she could borrow your black album cd.
It was the Album that appealed to mostly everyone.
If He likes that then yeah go a head and listen to real old school metallica !

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

What you say Officer M168, makes a lot of sense.

[off topic]

But it's a strange thing this thrash category.

I can't put early Metallica in the same category as Rein In Blood. Slayer's album is brilliant for what it does but it lacks the melody of Metallica.

I'm sure there's proper sub-categories for all this...

Re: Recommend me a Metallica CD please!

i was watching the History of Metal on VH1 and they asked some of the artists to name all the sub categories of metal music, i think they came up with 50 odd variety's.
And when they got onto thrash they mentioned Anthrax, Slayer Megadeath & the No.1 band Metallica.
