Too much music

A quite depressing thought entered my head today while I was munching my way through half eaten Easter eggs and listening to Husker Du – I will reach a point in the future when I will have more music than I can listen to. Also with music production and distribution being much cheaper and more straightforward I find myself buying far more music than I used to so I can discover the real gems which bloats my music collection.

In fact I dare say I struggle to listen to as much music as I would like to even now when my responsibilities are low and free time high. I don’t own an mp3 player as I like to savour the moment when I listen to a whole album on the hifi; if I listened to music all the time I think it would dilute my enjoyment. Anyone else ever thought about this?

Re: Too much music

I disagree. I listen to music all day on headphones at work. Doesn't dilute my enjoyment at all, instead encourages me find more and more music to listen too

Re: Too much music

I listen to music a lot, shuffle on mp3 player is a must IMHO and helps dig out albums you've forgotten about. I also listen to social internet radio sites which have opened my eyes to a load more bands. So computer music management is clearly taking over my listening habits but in a positive way.

As for more music than you can listen to, you just need a good filtering process to make sure what you can listen to is great and best suited to your tastes

But how can I be sure? What sort of filtering methods do you use?

Whenever I have gone a day or two without music I enjoy it even more so I thought buying an mp3 player might do the opposite.

Re: Too much music

Sites such as Jango and last.fm allow you to pair up bands you like with other suggestions, so you basically get serviced radio stations with music you should like. It goes further than this as you can rate what you hear, so you'll get fed more stuff you like and conversely block songs you don't.

Similarly, my mp3 player lets you rate songs and has a DJ option that helps you pick an album, from favourites to albums you've not listened to for a while.

Going into sad geek mode, I like guitar based rock, but generally like most things, so I have various channels set up, from heavy to light rock, indie and dance, so when the mood takes, I just pick that set up or just hit shuffle. It's good fun too

Re: Too much music

I do know what you mean, I buy albums on a regular basis but sometimes don't have enough time to listen to them for quite a while. I use an ipod so can listen to music where ever, and find I listen more in the car and in the office than I used to, but I also like my tv, reading etc...

I love the shuffle option, but most of the time I like to listen to albums as a whole so I have a 'today' playlist and a couple of times a week I spend time sorting through my albums and deciding which ones I haven't listen to for a while, and putting them in the playlist, trying to make sure all moods are covered!

I can see where you're coming from, but I find that rather than taking away from my enjoyment it adds to it as I can listen in so many different places rather than just at home. Sat in the park with the sun shining, eyes closed and a fab album on....nothing better

Re: Too much music

I get where you are coming from as well.
I currently have about 600 CDs with a growth rate of about 6 - 10 a month at the moment.
Due to the fact that I work away from home a lot I don't get as much time to listen to music on a stereo setup I have spent £000s on . I only get to listen to music about 7 - 8 hours a week.
I do own an iPod but only use it on planes. I am sat in a hotel room at the moment but I am not listening to my iPod because it's just not the same as listening on a good stereo setup at home. I listen in my car - but that's not the same either.
When I win the lottery I will build a dedicated listening room with stupid amounts of money spent on amps & speakers and have my whole house loaded with speakers networked into every room.
Until that time I have to make do with the time I can set aside for music .
Funnily enough I am the opposite of Pezzerino. If I don't get to listen to some good music properly on a regular basis I get withdrawal syptoms .
Do I enjoy it any less or will I stop buying more music ?
NO CHANCE
