recommendations in quality recordings

Hard, because of music tastes, but not as interested in type/content, but more about quality of recording.

I have recently set up a new home system using onkyo 805 and a pair of B&W 685s, I have tried a few CDs via my bd 35 and a lot of them get a slight hiss. I have been advised that this is because it is "older" music and poorer recording so speakers picking up detail good and bad. I have tried, Niel Diamond, cat stevens, some blues, some 60's soul and my favourite rock music (ac/dc, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbeth).

I have been told I should look out for recordings that have DDD on the back, but cannot find any markings on any of my CDs. Can anyone recomend any top quality recorded CDs that would really show how good these speakers are, my preference is Rock, Classical, Blues, Soul and basically good musicians and top vocals. Cannot stand any computer driver crap such as dance/house/garage/tend/caravan etc.

cheers

Re: recommendations in quality recordings

I know that the ECM label takes great care on their recordings, though they mainly specialise in jazz. The same goes for Blue Note label. Windham Hill Records are also very good both in the quality of artists and recordings, try Michael Hedges 'Aerial Boundaries' which is very well recorded acoustic guitar.

If you after rock, then I recall Whitesnake 1987 being DDD.

In fact I think it sounds better than the recent remaster

Re: recommendations in quality recordings

If I recall these were mastered DDD

Dire straits - Brothers In Arms
Dire straits - On every street
Steve Winwood - Back In The High Life

& I think that Tears for fears - Songs from the big chair, may have been too.

But this all from memory !

Re: recommendations in quality recordings

I thought all music would be in last 6 years or so...or remastered to be so, is this not the case?

If not, is there other formats, what do people do when their kit picks up the details (mainly good, but some bad), just accept the slight hissing? lol

Re: recommendations in quality recordings

Jimmy Page's Outlander album is a good recording especially prison blues. Dont know if its DDD. The band yello have some of the best produced CD's I have ever heard. The cd Flag contains their famous single the race and sounds fab!! Dont know if that will fit in with your tastes. Also Dali the speaker manufacturer produced a CD called "The Dali CD" suprisingly that is a complilation of some amazing recordings that do show how good a good system is and how an average system can sound amazing. Virtually all the manufacturuers at thr Manchester Hi Fi show 2007 nicked it to demo their kit so you can see how good it is!!

Here's a link for the tracks if you are interested:- Extreme Audio *DALI THE DALI CD

Yes I'm a big fan of Yello (good to see that there are others here too!). The original cds STILL sound good, but the recent remasters series are fantastic, unlike many (U2 please stand up).

"I have been told I should look out for recordings that have DDD on the back," that is shockingly bad advice, research on good analogue recordings mastered recordings.
Start with Mobile Fidelity and Audio Fidelity CDs.

Re: recommendations in quality recordings

I have been buying less and less CD's due to being constatntly dissappointed with the recording quality and the ever more dynamic compression applied.

However, check out Elbow's Seldom seen Kid. This bucks the current Lo-Fi trend and sounds very good indeed and is very good musically too.

Would agree with both those comments. Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss is another exceptional recording.

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Just listened to the whole album and no hiss, no discernable compression.

In fact it's the best sound album I have heard in years, amazing stereo imagery.

Sounds like: Kate Bush-Hounds of Love, bits of Bjork.
