Mastodon-crack the sky

Starts well, a strange departure from their usual blood and guts anger and brutal riffs. This was almost like Yes meets King Crimson meets a metal band (I don't know which metal band exactly but the trade mark Mastodon sounds are there so I would have to say Mastodon).

Might take a few listens to get into this one. I found the last album very derivative, but thought Leviathon was superb.

Needs a few listens, but it is a modern masterpiece. The band always had the progressive edge, but now they have the technical ability to pull it off.

Usually when I hear something that grabs my interest it's usually tugging at me for a return listen just to discover more. That means interesting and different. Thats how it is with this album. Cant say 'modern masterpiece', but there was enough in those first few tracks to make me want more. A very good sign.

Re: Mastodon-crack the sky

I have never got Mastodon - Im trying to shy away from saying they are crap... but I do think they sound very unfocussed, bland, they were terrible live when I saw them and just dont think they have the technical ability to really do what they want. I just cant understand what all the fuss is about. I checked out the new album and thought it was boring and uninspiring but The Czar was not bad, that was the only track I enjoyed.
Another band people seem to be raving about that I think are beyond boring are Gojira - they were poor live too. Lamb of God wreak of heard it all before - maybe its the media like Kerrap and Metal Hammer telling the kids to like this **** haha

In terms of technical ability......they definitely have it. Leviathon is probably the best album to get your teeth into, takes a few listens.

The new album is quite different, different direction entirely. Which is good

Re: Mastodon-crack the sky

thought it was awesome, might be a masterpiece- suppose only time will tell if I'm still playing it in 5 or 10 years time. It's alot different from their previous stuff, good to see that they are evolving.

Never got into blood mountain, but enjoyed leviathan and remission.
