Strangely there are no threads with direct titles.
Despite my decision never to buy this album. Well, today I saw it in the sales for £7, so I thought I would take a punt..
Aw, why did I do it? I knew it would be terrible and after 25 minutes of overly long, compressed to hell tracks it was consigned to the dustbin of 'I should have known better'.
That's it for me. Metallica will sit in my memories as I band that did some great stuff. Even the Black Album was reasonable.
This album is just terrible IMO. Two stars at the very most.

The mixing and mastering a diabolical, but what was recorded has no issues. My friend got hold of the individual tracks from the Guitar Hero version and has spent the past few months tweaking them using some high end studio mixing and mastering software, and the result is great.
The cymbals no longer pierce your eardrums, the toms no longer sound like snares, and Rob's bass is more to the fore.

Really like this album, very reminiscent of the old school Metallica and I throughly enjoyed the their gig in Nottingham!
Sure, as always with Metallica, the production causes controversy, but its the songs that matter!

This is what I posted back in Sept last year. Quote:
I was disappointed with it after the reviews.
The songs are also unneccesarily overlong. I've only listened to it twice, and both times I have switched off by track 8. If it was a live album it may have worked better for me......guess I need a few more listens.
Some great tracks on there mind ...just gets a bit too samey (is that a word ) for me.
I'm not a die hard, so don;t slate me for my opinion.
| I'll dig it out and give it another few listens to see if anything has changed.
Justice for All gets played regulary.

I thought it was crap on first few listens, then liked it for a week, then realised I was forcing myself to like it because I used to love Metallica - but knew deep down that it was crap. There are some great moments, and if you shaved 4 minutes of every track it may be a bit more bearable. I quite like long songs, as long as its going somewhere with plenty of changes, but most of these songs sound like a 4 minute song played twice back to back with a solo in the middle.
I wouldnt miss them live though and they were amazing in Manchester a few weeks ago.
I would rather they released another album such as Load or a new direction, where they have just evolved into a different sound - as the last two albums seem to be trying too hard to be cooler, heavier and trying to recreate former glories and seem incredibly forced.

I wasn't a huge fan of the new album, really hated the mix and Lars seems to get worse as a drummer as he gets older. Then I saw them at the o2 at the beginning of March and new stuff sounded awesome, have to say, since then the new album has grown on me.

When I first listened to it I really liked it (apart from the recording quality) but I've listened to it less and less over the months.
What I do notice though is that they seemed to have ripped off a lot of their own stuff from the past! I listen to parts of a lot of tracks and think "well that one sounds just like One in that part" and this sounds exactly like another track etc.

The drumming is awful, it's as if he is trying to create a style based on more modern metal drummers and misses by a Bass drum width.
There is a point on the album when I wondered if he was actually playing the same song, it was just messy and over played (and not over played with any precision, really sloppy almost amateur).
Lars isn't a particularly brilliant drummer as I am sure he admitted several times. During earlier albums he just kept it simple. This is where he is strong, it's his style and it works well. On this album it seems they have tried to recapture their thrash days and lars sounds like he has tried to evolve backwards to get in more bpm in an attempt to 'improve' the work he did on past albums.

I like it granted the production may not be great, but its there best album in year's. Plus the new stuff sounds great live, seen them twice this year, and a third time coming up in November in NY.
