Bands who should have given up the ghost

Name your bands who you think we great up until they recorded Album X then went rapidly downhill.

I'll start

Despite getting off to a slightly dodgy start The Cure recorded three excellent albums

Seventeen Seconds
Faith
Pornography

Pornography being the ultimate **** Off album

After which Fat Bob decided to become the superstar he always wanted to be and The Cure produced an endless stream of drivel.

Korn,

Everything post 'Issues' (which I think is great, I know a lot of other korn fans don't) has been, err lets say less than good.

Queensryche. They have gone rapidly down hill since EMPIRE. Every release since then has gradually out-bettered itself for being woefully inadequate. If they were your beloved pet you would have put them down years ago and ended the misery.

I really just wish they would give up now as they are a mere shadow of their former great self

The Rolling Stones. What are/were they about? They may have been good at some point according to some but whey are they doing still going today? Apart from making money.

None of these were EVER any good. The thread is about bands who were good until they released such and such a record

Re: Bands who should have given up the ghost

If I was asked this question in 2007 I would have definately agreed with Metallica, first 4 albums were excellent. I'm not a fan of the black album but I know a lot of people who are. Then Load, Reload and St Anger were definately the turkeys. But they've definately done a u turn with DM. In a way I'm glad they didn't give up the ghost and they're still one of the best live acts around.

I wont buy it on principle now. I always find 'return to form' albums to be merely better than those that have gone before and I'm always disappointed with them. Metallica were good, they are still professional musicians and should be able to roll out a tune or two, they tried to be different with St Anger (it wasn't great but they tried), just going back to the same old stuff doesn't do it for me. That was then and this is now.

My take on bands is that there are three types of musician:

There is the passionate musician who lacks instrumental/vocal skill, but they elevate above this level because of the raw passion within their songs and performance.

There is the virtuoso musician who is technically brilliant, but somehow plays by numbers.

Then there is the combination of both of these components which brings on the sonic fireworks that wows an audience.

Metallica were in that arena of virtuoso and passion. Now they seem to be virtuoso and little else. The act seems stale. There performances seem a shadow of what they used to be, far more theater and less real. Thats not to say they are crap, certainly not, but somehow they are a lot less than what they used to be, almost a parody. Thats why I'm no longer interested. As long as others are enjoying them that's fine.

Once Upon a Time is admittedly the album that epitomises their mid eighties American FM radio period. But that's exactly the period of Simple Minds that I love!

I've got Saints and Sinners - Johnny and the Self Abusers 7" in my collection

Simple minds went too commercial after Reel to Real Cacophony saying that though New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) is not a bad album.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - I thought Blood Sugar Sex Magik was the beginning of the end for the Chillis - all the fun went out of them... then they go and hit the big time with horrible boring coffee table rock! You can sing the lyrics from the songs on Californication to the songs on By The Way - they are just rehashing the same old boring stuff.
Foo Fighters are another band that leave a bad taste in my mouth too.
Just when all these bands churn out crap they get big - and there so called biggest fans are the ones who have chosen to ignore there first 5 records or so!

Great Album!
I just wish that they hadn't used the snorerathon gig in Verona for the dvd, rather would have had the Rotterdam gig from '85.

Did they film anything for the Live In The City of Light gig?

Great thread. I have to disagree with that to some extent. Boys Don't Cry beats those three hands down. Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me was and still is a fabulous album... after that I'd agree

I'm a big U2 fan...up to Joshua Tree...then major down hill...I'm going to see them in August though.

I agree with Rolling Stones. Not liked anything after Sticky Fingers.

Prince...lost the plot on Graffiti Bridge...before that he was very impressive.

and my last...Pink Floyd after Wish you were here...although it was good to see them back together for Live8

In my opinion U2 have made 6 truly great albums.

They are in this order....

The Unforgettable Fire
Boy
The Josua Tree
War
Achtung Baby
Zooropa.

Tears for Fears should have given up after Songs from the Big Chair..
