I wont buy it on principle now. I always find 'return to form' albums to be merely better than those that have gone before and I'm always disappointed with them. Metallica were good, they are still professional musicians and should be able to roll out a tune or two, they tried to be different with St Anger (it wasn't great but they tried), just going back to the same old stuff doesn't do it for me. That was then and this is now.
My take on bands is that there are three types of musician:
There is the passionate musician who lacks instrumental/vocal skill, but they elevate above this level because of the raw passion within their songs and performance.
There is the virtuoso musician who is technically brilliant, but somehow plays by numbers.
Then there is the combination of both of these components which brings on the sonic fireworks that wows an audience.
Metallica were in that arena of virtuoso and passion. Now they seem to be virtuoso and little else. The act seems stale. There performances seem a shadow of what they used to be, far more theater and less real. Thats not to say they are crap, certainly not, but somehow they are a lot less than what they used to be, almost a parody. Thats why I'm no longer interested. As long as others are enjoying them that's fine.
