Who's your favourite musician \ composer and why?

I would say its a toss up between Matt Balamey and Mark Knofler for me, I think that Matt Balamey has taken guitaring to the next level with the effects and genius he puts behind his music. I think he got bored with the way guitaring is done and wanted to push it to the next level and if I could play like anyone I would choose to be able to play like him.

Mark Knofler on the other hand is also just briliant, I like the precision and time and effort he puts into his music, the time he dedicates to his music too.

As for musical scores and the more classical style of musics go I would have to say Iian Eshkeri would be my favourite the way he manages to capture such emotion in his music to me is just mind blowing.

Hans Zimmer - Do I really need to explain why?

Venetian Snares - His drum programming is ridiculously perfected.

Boards of Canada - Just always have time to listen to these, nice relaxed ambient electronica.

Jimi Hendrix - Figured I should put a guitarist in here.

I figure Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison probably deserve mentions for songs written, but they're not essentially favourite artists to listen to.

Difficult one really.

I'd say...

Guitarist - Bryan May (my favourite - not necessarily the best)
Drummer - Johnny Rabb, just unbelievable the speed he can drum at
Keyboard - tough one. Victor Borge could do things with a piano that most can only dream of.

Composer - Probably John Williams. I do like the 'modern' composers - Zimmer etc, but Williams's creations are amazing and have really stood the test of time

John Petrucci

Ennio Morricone

Beethoven

I guess the reasons are simply that they excite me or move me like no other artists etc

Re: Who's your favourite musician \ composer and why?

Pop - Pet Shop Boys [consistently by far the best melodies of any pop group, coupled with lyrics way too good for pop]

Rock - Queen [for the sheer inventiveness and range]

Electronic - Kraftwerk [if you need this explaining, you're deaf ]

Singer/songwriter - Leonard Cohen [the best lyrics of any songwriter in popular music outside musical theatre]

Prog Rock - Gryphon [totally underrated band]

Classical composer - if forced to choose, probably Beethoven, if only for the piano sonatas

Hans Zimmer... the guy is an absolute genius and the only person in the world who has really mastered the art of blending a huge orchestra with modern technology.

In my opinion, he's the greatest composer alive today! Noone else comes close.

OOh forgot to mention Danny Elfman in amongst my faves. I think Elfman and Morricone dwarf anything that Hans Zimmer has accomplished - but its personal tastes, Im not starting a war of words

No great surprise but I'm going to say Frank Zappa ( my sig. may have made it obvious. )
Amazing musician , supremely talented writer / lyricist , truly accomplished composer / arranger and musical innovator.
The man understood , appreciated & loved all types of music. An inspiring man.
Honest , I'm not in love with him but I do have a FZ tattoo on my back

If I had to limit it to one person I would put forward Brian Eno. He has been consistently good since his keyboard playing and knob twiddling(stop giggling at the back!) with Roxy music through his countless albums to his production values with the likes of talking Heads, U2, James etc.

Zappa was brilliant. I had the good fortune to see him live twice.
