Record Collectors

Are there many on here?

Any good forums or sites you can recommend?

My Dad used to be a collector (before the days of the internet) etc and has thousands upon thousands of records he's currently throwing onto ebay, I want to try help him get the best he can from his collection and try find the best places to sell, check prices etc etc

He gets recordcollector mag for pricing guides etc and he knows a lot about the records etc just looking for places on the internet, ideally ones people have experience with.
Anything?

Re: Record Collectors

I was going to suggest getting Record Collector mag and looking if there's any record fairs near you that he could get a stall at, can't you advertise any rare disc's in the mag, failling that check the phone book/yellow pages for local 2nd hand record shops...probably all things you have thought off....lastly can you not put a forsale list in the forum classifieds or is that not allowed.

Re: Record Collectors

I just worry that putting them on ebay can be a bit hit and miss, a lot of people don't like ebay/paypal and a lot of people might just miss a listing...
Hence the concern and this thread.

My Dad likes the speed and ease of ebay, but I just wonder if anyone knows of a better idea to do it, there are some rare discs from a mass bought collection many years ago (15,000 records) some are junk but there are also some rarer test pressings and picture discs etc, this is why he's not got a full list of everything he has, he just gets a handful and lists them on ebay.
I was just thinking it might be an idea to catalogue them all fully or something, but i'm not a collector/dealer, he knows more than me.

I just want to try make sure he's getting the most out of what he's selling so if anyone has any experience with selling records their input would be appreciated!
Or a buyer and where they look for their records.

Sadly local record shops and such seem to be vanishing and replaced by larger chains, and a shop will never pay the same as a collector or fan of the band, especially when it comes to Test Pressings, Acetates, Promos and Picture Discs etc.

I will however tell him to think about record fairs, he used to do a lot of them years ago when he was a dealer, but he'll have to catalogue his collection and get an idea on the pricing. The last test pressing he sold fetched more than he expected, so I guess ebay does have some benefits.

Re: Record Collectors

i banged a load of my punk 77-79 vinyl on ebay a couple of years ago and was astounded at the responce i got,i came away with over 5-6 grand, i think i really hit it at the right time and didnt have a clue they was worth so much, before i chanced ebay i was offered 50 quid for the lot,so id say go for it, the posting was a pain especially as it was 99% overseas and i must say i really regret selling them now.

Re: Record Collectors

Yeah, there will always be collectors out there so there's always going to be buyers for the popular / rarer stuff.

Most of them at the moment seem to be going abroad, Germany and Japan being the main places, as long as you make sure the price is covered then it's not so much of a problem, the guy at the post office has given my Dad the forms to fill in at home before going there so he doesn't have to do them in the Post Office, makes that a little easier.

Re: Record Collectors

As a still avid buyer of vinyl I have stopped going to record fairs etc and now only buy/sell records on ebay, you can still find rare stuff and sometimes bag a bargain, if selling, and you time it right you can receive a good price

Re: Record Collectors

Yeah ebay seems to be the route to go, the cost of getting a stall at fairs now which don't seem to attract as many people as they used to and they're restricted to this country, as for record collector mag its a lot more expensive to sell in there than on ebay which has a larger userbase, seems like ebay is the place to do it really.
