DVD-A & SACD will crash & burn...

...if Sony etc don't sack the people currently deciding which albums to convert to these new formats..

Footloose, Kenny Logins, Toto, Chicargo ????? Come on.

They'll probably decide the format is a flop based on no-one buying the cheesy sound track to the naff 80's movie Footloose. I would love to meet the plonkers who are deciding the albums to put on DVD-A & SACD.

Also, they remaster Toto and Footloose into 5.1 but they leave Rollingstones in sterio???

I love my multichannel music and don't want it to die

Aaaahhh. I feel better now

Same thing as happened with new fangled 8-Track Cartridges and musicassettes in seventies then later with CD.
Record companies must figure fortysomethings the main target for SACD / DVD-A releases.
Much as Pet Sounds, Billion Dollar Babies and The Captain And Me are fantastic in hi-res as are many of the others, the only way hi-res is going to be taken seriously is with hybrid releases of latest hot stuff.
Maybe I'm completely wrong, should just open a bottle of wine and live my life in 1976.

The new Iron Maiden Album "Dance of Death" which was released on CD yesterday (8.9.03) will be released on DVD-A format some time in October..I've heard the DVD-A mix of the single "Wildest Dreams" and it is an excellent multichannel mix.

Looking foward to doing a full CD/DVD-A comparison when its released.

I am starting to agree with Jus. I have posted before on the laughable SACD/DVDA stock in the countries biggest record stores. HMV and Megastore on Oxford Street.

Without wishing to sound like a flash bast' I have just spent 4 days in New York, where they also have big stores. The coverage of SACD & DVDA was better, just.

Big HMV had some, got SO by Peter Gabriel for a tenner. Virgin on Times square was a joke. Furthest point from the door 2 floors down in a dark corner. Choice was rubbish. Best Buy (always my fav in USA) wasnt too bad. Biggest Choice by far. Got Joe Satriani Engines of Creation SACD for eleven quid. Tower Records was Ok but no where near as good as their web site for SACD.

DVDA selection was minimal in all but Best Buy. Mostly duffers music.

So two of the greatest cities on earth with monster record shops and the SACD/DVDA showing is poor.

Next thing the stores will be claiming that the Internet is destroying the music business!!

I dont think these formats are ready for prime time. Its an education issue. My other half still doesnt understand why there is DVDA and SACD. And more importantly why she should care.

Marketing blokes need to extract digits in my opinion.

And another thing. Not one store out of 6 or 7 visited had the Rolling Stones on SACD. Not one. I thought it was a worldwide release.

It was recorded in stereo. It's meant to be listened to in stereo.
Am I the only one who doesn't get this fad with 5.1 music?
Remastering from stereo tapes to a 5.1 mix just lead to a false placement of instruments and a rather muddled soundstage. I've yet to hear a decent surround mix that isn't jazzed up and over-the-top... when albums are recorded that way then I'll start listening to them that way, at the moment its just a new novelty to sell the formats. to the masses.

Give me a high quality stereo remaster over an average 5.1 mix anyday, besides which the Rolling Stones SACD issues are absolutely amazing compared to the originals, so I don't know what you're complaining about.. if you're really that way inclined, lay back, hit the ProLogic2 button and enjoy.

Talking of DVD-A and SACS, does anyone know a good site listing all DVD-A and SACS discs available. Also, as I'm new to DVD-A, is there an equivalent of region coding. Can my player play US discs? Or if it's multiregion for DVD-V, will US discs play anyway?

Cheers for that; good DVD-A selection. It says the SACD list is under construction - Any other recommendations.

Play have a few DVDA and SACD. Towerrecords.co.uk (and the US site which is joined) have a good selection at not bad prices. Delivery from US in about a week.

EZYDVD and futureent also have DVDA discs.

I have not noticed any region coding on DVDA, but I have a region free player so no clue anyway.

There's certainly something there,as I have a Toshiba 125E that came free with my TV,and it hasn't been multi-region enabled...it simply will not play a DVD-A,whilst the multi-region HCPC and my ancient Samsung DVD that my kids use have no problems at all.

Yeah, you are correct on that, was given misleading info in my local record store where I heard it. Got my hands on a copy of the DVD-single and concur with you.

Kali,

I haven't listened to a disc that has a muddled soundstage. Which ones are you referring to? Footloose ?

I'm sure it does depend on the mixing engineer and also your system. If you have lower quality rear speakers you're not going to get matching sounds from the rears so it may sound muddled for that reason.
