The Coral: Magic and Medicine

Just got this album in the post! Marvellous!

It's quite easy to spot their influences: Byrds, Doors, Manfred Mann, Animals, etc. However, I don't think any of it is actually 'ripped off': it's more of a homage.

Great album, and a band with enormous potential. Real instruments, and not just drums and guitars! I think that rock might be finally making a bit of a comeback. There's been a dearth of talent recently, in my view.

Terrible album cover, though...

I fear a return to postings involving eye patches, cutlasses, barnacles and parrots .

I bought the first White Stripes album yesterday, too! That too is a fine album, in my view.

We might be seeing a bit of a 60's/70's style revival. I for one am happy about that. As long as it isn't plagairism, and it's a good tune, then I'm happy to listen.

I don't see why people are so down on these bands: they're a breath of fresh air as far as I'm concerned.

Avast ye scurvy dogs! Cap'n Gambit be here! Aye, The Coral be pirates all right, and swashbuckling one's at that, arrrrr.

I have to admit I like the new single, though can still dance a fine hornpipe to it, despite a country undertone. Maybe they've got a fixed premesis on land too now as oppose to just their trusty galleon? Or maybe they've got new parrots which are squawking different messages to them?

They can't be pirates: they sometimes use tenses other than the present.

I'm not convinced it's all nicked: it just sounds familiar in places. That's got more to do with their sound than anything, I reckon.

Confessions of ADDD is very Pink Floyd, but it's not actually the same: it just has a similar feel to Astronomie Dominie, without actually nicking.

Biggest pirate I know is Robbie Effing Williams: he's the pikey of the music world. He even nicked an Ian Dury song while his body was still warm in the ground.

Ahoy Rhoamish, I think ye be misunderstanding me: I don't mean the Coral steal music, but write music for pirates and are, in fact, pirates of the seven sea's themselves. They wear patchs and pantaloons, crutches and parrot's etc... Pirates the lot of them.

you see what I mean, it was very unwise and is unlikely to result in anything like a serious debate on the merits of Coral

Surely pirates have a preference for the accordion?

I'm starting to feel a trifle confused.

By the way, does one wear a parrot, or is a parrot an item that one 'sports'?

He wasn't rich, he wasn't poor
Though how he longed for so much more
At night he dreamed of buccaneers
Pirate ships and privateers

Perhaps they're nautical historians, rather than pirates?

JohnG: do you have to sit somewhere different to listen to each band?? I normally listen to all sorts of music in the same place...
