Songs you thought were crap but not now

Just listening to some music tonight and something struck me whilst listening - When this first came out I thought it was absolute crap and would never listen to it - but now I like it !

I'll start the ball rolling with

I'm a MASSIVE fan of the genre so there's not alot of electro/rap/hip hop I don't enjoy (apart from the fake-ass wannabees, p.diddy anyone???) but an 80's record that I despised as a kid but love now is 'Tainted Love'

What's that all about??

Got to say though I prefer the Manson cover. Its the breaks and the tune that get me....I still don't know what the words are!!!!

Saw in on 'Calendar' and though oo horrible. As did the presenters judging by thier faces !

8 years later and I'm still listening to those tracks now and then

When I first heard the Kings of Leon 'Only by the Night' album I hated it due to the vocals but have got used to it now and like it.

I'm hoping that Opeth Heritage starts to grow on me soon, but so far I just keep switching it off

Songs I used to hate but now I like? Sad to say, but I'm pretty consistent. Stuff I loathed 'back in the day' I still can't stand now.

The only thing that's grabbed me recently that I didn't use to like is Carly Simon's 'You're so Vain'. Helped no end, by the cover of 'No Secrets'.

I'm thinking that Heritage might grow on me. I've not had the opportunity to do any relaxing listening to music over the last 3 months as I've had a loft conversion done and my house is still in total chaos. The only times I've tried to listen to it have been in the car on long journeys and it's the wrong type of music for me when driving.

prince wrote and recorded a song called girl power with sheila e in 1988 long before all of them, and it was a popular term amoungst grrrl bands (pop punk) in the early 90s before shampoo and the spice girls

yep that was essentially how Shampoo came to use it since they were heavily Riot grrrl influenced indie kids (and certainly not a manufactured pop group) who also published a Manics fanzine

I used to hate The Smiths during their peak. When they would come on I would have the radio turned over in 2secs.

Now when I hear their songs I realise many of them are actually quite good.

Bizarrely, the other way round with me. I still like them, but I find Morrissy's drone gets right on my pecs these days.

4th best selling band of all time and still selling very well. The stats don't lie, they were doing something right. Doesn't mean you have to be fan, but the hit records were a genius of hooks, production, melody, orchestration and performance. I hated them, I still don't own any of their albums and am unlikely to, but I can at least appreciate that it's good music even if it isn't my type of music.

If you have any humanity and have been through a split with a partner, if that doesn't get to you, then you need to get walking up the yellow brick road :-)

Never used to like the Arctic Monkeys when they first came about. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is one song by them I didn't like at the time, but now I love it.

The first few times I heard it, I didn't like Stairway to Heaven. Now, I feel completely different.

Also, now that I'm old enough to not give a stuff, Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas. Just doesn't feel like Christmas until I hear that song on the radio.

Been on and off with Abba since the 70's. Liked them in the 70's, went off them during my 'ardcore phase in the late 70's to late 80's, then got back into them again recently, for the reasons you've put down. Great songcraft, excellent hooks', pop at it's best.

:-) my ego had issues admitting to liking their music, I clung on to the idea that I could resist. Like the previous poster said, there comes a point when I no longer gave a stuff and just embraced any music of recognisable quality. It opened up a far broader range which included county music, hip hop and many of the greats like Sinatra. That's no to say its the first thing I play, I'm just no longer sneering like a sulky juvenile.

I tried a couple of times to listen to Heritage via headphones and fell asleep both times.... it's not looking good !!
