Classical music - battle theme.

Hey people, what classical music do you recommend for battle scenes?

Looking for a mix of hard to soft and slow music.

Im really getting into my book which is called Wolf of the Plains by Conn Iggulden and when I read it, I think of so many things and can imagine the scenes, especially as I love scenes like from LOTR, Mongol, Conan, 300 etc, I want to play some music in my room on quite a low volume.

Any recommendations would be great, thanks in advance,

Re: Classical music - battle theme.

The obvious ones are Holst's Planets and bits of Wagner's Ring Cycle, but you could also try Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle, though it would have to be in the original Hungarian or the singing will interrupt your reading.
Or how about Provokiev's Alexander Nevsky? I haven't heard it all the way through for some years: someone else may be able to advise you.

I envy you - reading and listening to music at the same time is something I've never been able to do without blocking either one out.

How about Wellington's Victory by Beethoven, or Tchaikovsky's 1812? Or are these a bit too obvious, or possibly distracting due to the guns and canons?

I love both of these pieces, and have a Telarc CD of Wellington's Victory, and a Telarc DVD-A of Tchaikovsky's 1812. Both highly recommended.

I find Dave Weystoner's suggestions very interesting, and like him am impressed if you can read and listen to music at the same time.

Re: Classical music - battle theme.

All the more interesting if I'd taken the trouble to spell Prokofiev correctly!

James, have you thought of soundtrack music from the films you list?

As implied above.
