Download / Torrent sites for CD quality or better?

Does anyone know of download or torrent sites for music of better quality than mp3? Thinking of CD primarily, but any SACD, DVDA etc would be welcome too.

Re: Download / Torrent sites for CD quality or better?

I'm not necessarily looking for "illegal" downloads. If any site were offering better than CD quality downloads I would use the service, but i'm not paying good money for mp3s.

All the music on iTunes is 128kb/s or 256kb/s mp3. I would have thought there was a (maybe limited) market for high quality downloadable audio, but can't seem to find anyone providing it.

They're not mp3 files - they're AAC (*.m4a).

Re: Download / Torrent sites for CD quality or better?

As DVD-A and SACD are mediums which cannot be ripped (despite claims to the contrary) you can neither up or download them.

There are vinyl recordings that have been transferred to digital medium, which of course offer better sound than CD, but these are rare.

As for CD quality, I would try LFC's links for FLAC or other lossless downloads.

Re: Download / Torrent sites for CD quality or better?

Recently came across this site for downloading music - Boomkat - Your independent music specialist

Great site if you like some of the more "off the wall" type stuff and experimental elctronica, and most of it seems to have no DRM and is in either 320kbps 44kHz or FLAC.

Got some Wooden Shjips and Holy **** which is excellent but obviously not everybodies cup of tea

For anyone prepared to take a 'lucky dip' approach I can heartily recommend the B&W Music Club.

The 'albums' are recorded by Peter Gabriel in his studio and released in Flac and Apple Lossless formats.

Thought I would bring this back to life as I am trying to see if there is any improvement in lossless high quaility downloads situation. Looking for legitimate sites and for quality. Failing that does anyone know of any CD sellers that offer good range but do not ship from the Channel Islands. I want to avoid the tax avoiders. Seems to be very hard to do,
Thanks.

I would try looking at the actual musicians websites nowadays. Many have started releasing their catalogues online in Flac and MP3. Usually at prices better than the retailers.

You only have to Google to find hundreds of CD sellers and surely most of the bigger distributers will have various tax avoidance schemes of their own whether it be the Channels Islands or not. In many instances it actually pays to go direct to the Record Companies themselves. Smaller independent ones in the States will ship to the UK and the cost is still cheaper than buying in the UK and if you want you can offer to pay customs duty as well.

Bleep do a variety of FLAC and WAV downloads. Mainly from the electro and alternative genres but I've been impressed with it.

Thanks to all. Wow really quick responses. Will take a look at suggestions.
I can find lots of CD sellers through google but when you look closely many seem to be associated so I am not sure the choice is as wide as it seems and not many let you know where supplying from.
Thanks.
