This is interesting stuff. I found it because I was looking for Jojo Mayers band 'Nerve'. This is funk. jazz and metal all combined. I reckon its fabulous so teh 'best of' will shortly be in my possession.

Re: Screaming Headless Torsos (not wot u expect!)

Just bought the album Choice cuts - It really is fabulous, great sound quality too.

If you go to http://screamingheadlesstorsos.com/Website/SHT.html you can listen to the entire album.........I think you can actually download it for free, not sure if thats entirely right.

I couldnt help but notice that this album has actually been reviewed by over 100 magazines. The Guardian gave it 4/4, Jazzwize UK- Manic Genius should ensure world domination, Guitar Player - Chops up the wazoo and a surplus of fire and intensity, Billboard - Cutting edge sounds that define todays musical landscape, Downbeat - Fuze (guitarist) has ideas oozing from his digits.

Strange how these bands go unnoticed by the mainstream. This is a truly stunning collection from their albums. If you like Miles Davis/Coltrane take on Jazz but welded to effortless funk with a hint of metal then you should love this...........it's almost progressive rock with soul, the sun shining on the bleak metallic walls of prog, it has me grooving out big time, lots of swing and all up tempo.

The musicianship is really beyond superb, the guitar playing is sublime, forget the Steve Vai/Satriani/Petrucci thing this is much more about the feel of the music a la Jimi Hendrix but with total precision and the drumming.....oh yes, amazing, not the trad jazz thing at all, cutting edge funk with a rock edge and totally fresh mainly due to Jojo mayers expertly crafted playing.

This is much less about technical ability (although they have it in spades and the band is as tight as they come) and much more about a total sound groove, more shades than just light and dark, much more than simple dynamics and time changes. The music is the message here, something that many bands just fail to communicate, a mixture of the old allied to the modern. All without a hint of introspection.

I'm definitely giving this 5/5. If you feel like something a bit different and are becoming bored with the rock scene but dont want to get into full on Robbie Coltrane just yet then this might be the antidote you crave.

The song in the video reminds me of a funkier Frizzle Fry/Seas of Cheese era Primus (which is not a bad thing).

Karkus

Wow - thanks for this! Never come across them before to my shame, but have just spent a couple of hours on You Tube watching them!
Have ordered Choice Cuts, but can't find the DVD in stock anywhere.

Cheers.
Phil

Reading the Bio from the website.......wow! he's a Berkley music professor and is using fretless guitars - no wonder the sound is so amazing.

For those who are into guitar gear and techniques the website is a real eye opener. Some of the guitar makers such as First Act are the luthiers for bands like Mastodon.

I couldn't find the DVD either, however you will be bowled over by the CD, the SQ is great. Even the live parts are well recorded and LOUD.
