Norman Whitfield Motown Great Dies.

Although probably not as well known as its singing stars he was every much apart of the label as any of them he wrote scores of songs for the artist such as I Heard It Through the Grapevine first recorded by Gladys Knight and the pips, that the well know version by Marvin Gaye. He became closely linked with The Temptations and wrote a lot of the hits such as Just my Imagination, fron the album he produced Sky’s the Limit which also came I believe was his first long concept track of near equal music to vocals Smiling Faces Sometimes. He repeated this on other albums such as Papa Was a Rolling Stone on All Directions and Masterpiece fron the album of the same name that also featured there hit Law of the Land.

Not forgetting his later work with Edwin Starr hit War. And his work on other labels such as the string of hits woth Rose Royes, Carwash, "I Wanna Get Next to You , Wishing on a Star and Love Don't Live Here Anymore.

Truly he has to be as great as any star that recorded one of his songs.

R.I.P. Norman.

Re: Norman Whitfield Motown Great Dies.

Thanks for the obit Garrett. Grapevine was one of those 'first love' songs for me, and Papa was a Rolling Stone and Love Don't Live Here Anymore are permanently burnt into my psyche. A Soul Giant, and no mistake.
