Thanks: Gave 15, Got 27 | The Doors Perception CD/DVD-A Query
Would someone be able to confirm how the packaging is for The Doors "Perception" DVD-A/CD Set, please?
I keep looking online, and notice that some websites list a "Slipcase Version". What does this mean, and is there an alternative version (apart from the CD only set)?
Thanks in advance. |

I cant help.......but the title is interesting.
A little known fact is that Doors name was based a book of research by Aldous Huxley called 'The doors of perception'. It was a research into the altered states of conciousness with the drug Mescaline (or Peyote as the Indians called it).
The Book title was based on a famous poem by the English poet genius William Blake from the Marriage of Heaven and Hell.
The line went: If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.
For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narow chinks of his cavern
That might be interesting to a few of you

Thank you very much. I feel that it was definately worth me getting out of bed this morning, and I shall go to bed that bit wiser tonight!
Seriously though, thanks.
Somebody out there must have the album? Anyone?

I've the slipcase version and from what I recall it is just a basic box and then inside there are the 6 individual album sets. These are just the standard two disc card foldout efforts that you can buy individually. I think initially it was made available in a more lavish boxset with a book and the slipcase was a later cheaper release. Let me know if you want anymore details and I'll dig it out.

"Yeah, all the time. It's called mescaline. It's the only way to fly."
Now you are even wiser

I take it you don't play it that often? I'm only interested in the DVD-A part of the set - which supposedly are really good. You're pretty sure the discs are not in separate jewel cases?

I checked today and as I thought it is just a simple card box with the six double sets inside. Each album is in a foldout card sleeve with two plastic trays and a third section holding a cd booklet. The type about half an inch thick, same as the REM or Depeche releases if you have any of them. I'm not the biggest of Doors fans but picked it up cheap from an Amazon marketplace seller. About 25 or 30 quid I think. Like most of my sacd and dvda collection I just dont find the time to listen to them often.

After spending a lot of time looking around various websites on Friday, I bit the bullet and ordered from eBay a brand new and sealed set.
I'm fairly confident I'll get what I think I've ordered, but it can be confusing! The set I've ordered is the digipack version - although I'm still not convinced there was ever a jewel case set.
I thought It would have arrived with me on Saturday, but no. I reckon I'll see it tonight when I get home, then all will be revealed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for your input. |

Thanks for your input. | Update!
My The Doors: Perception CD/DVD-A set arrived yesterday. It was exactly as I expected, i.e. CD & DVD-A double digipacks.
It's absolutely incredible! As previously mentioned, I'm not bothered about the CDs, but have already started to give the DVD-As a trial run. So far, I feel I prefer the stereo MLP mix over the 5.1. The clarity is so amazing, and even the stereo mix sounds almost multi-channel!
A very good buy at GBP 30.00! Highly recommended.

As long as it supports DVD-V, you will be able to play the compressed audio part of the DVD-As, i.e. DD or DTS. As I only ever play the hi-res layer, I can't quite remember if both DD and DTS are options, or just one of these. As Sony have never supported MLP, you will not be able to play the hi-res layer. The CDs of the set should also play, but you're probably already aware of that.
I have googled around a bit, and found the official Playstation website, which states the following:-
"PlayStation 3 60GB will be able to play CD, DVD and Super Audio CD (SACD), as well as using Blu-ray Discs. PlayStation 3 60GB also embodies a combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable it to be compatible with a broad range of original PS one and a limited range of PlayStation 2 titles."
I realise that it states 60GB above, whereas your question related to 40GB, but I hope it might help. This information was in the FAQ part of the website.
I hope this helps. This really is a fantastic album. |

Anyway I have the perception slipcase box set, and although I don't have a DVD-A capable machine anymore, I do play the HDCDs on the PS3(60GB)
Oh, you get Dobbly 5.1 if you wish....
P.s. I never thought much of the DVD-A(MLP)in 5.1 mode(via a Arcam DV 139), although 2 CH was sweet!

I can't really say yet why I prefer the 2CH MLP mix over the MCH MLP (on my Arcam DV137), but it is truly wonderful, and sounds almost MCH to my ears - superb separation/soundfield.
