Re: Metallica at the O2

Having watched their Reading set a coupla weeks ago, it was all old classics apart from 2 songs off the new album (The Day That Never Comes & Cyanide), though I would expect a few more off the new album tomorrow. They didn't play anything from Load, Re-load or St. Anger, which is a good thing in my book, especially in St. Anger's case.

Reading set list was :
Creeping Death
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Ride The Lightning
Harvester Of Sorrow
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Cyanide
And Justice For All
No Remorse
The Day That Never Comes
Master Of Puppets
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
One
Enter Sandman
Last Caress
So What
Seek & Destroy

Re: Metallica at the O2

Pretty good chance of hearing those 3 if Reading was anything to go by. I have a mixed feeling of amazement & depression that it's 25 years since I first saw them at the old Marquee club on the Kill 'Em all tour. God I'm old. Despite more recent inferior albums, they've never failed to deliver live, so it should be a good night.

I came within minutes of getting tickets this morning. A friend of mine managed to get a couple that went on sale but by the time I got there they had gone again.

Re: Metallica at the O2

I am SO jealous! I didn't even know the gig was happening till last Tuesday, and of course far to late to get registered for it. And seeing as it's fan club and missionmetallica premium members only, and being a ticketless event, no way to even buy a ticket without going with someone who registered and got allocated 2 "tickets" but only want s one!

So I can only console myself by listening to my copy of Death Magnetic that dropped through my letter box less than 4 mins ago

Re: Metallica at the O2

Ill cut and paste what i wrote in the other thread when i got in last night.

Just got back from the o2 gig and it was awesome!

They had the stage in the middle like the "Cunning stunts" dvd and the tracks from the new album sounded superb live.

A few highlights for me were-

The thing that should not be (bowel-loosening riff!)
Frantic
Stone cold crazy

Lars said feb/mar for some arena gigs.

Only difference from the Berlin gig was they dropped Blitzgrieg for Stone cold crazy.

All that for a £5!

I don't understand. It is a genre defining song. One of the greatest metal songs from the 90's. Dropping it from the set is like Maiden dropping Run to the Hills or Number of the Beast.

One of the best gigs i've been too, Metallica really pulled out all the stops last night.

Though I could see that James really does hate any amateur filming / photography - "Look guys, just put away the camera's and phone's - enjoy tonight without trying to get some ****** two-minute video for YouTube"

It's my age. I could quite happily do with nothing after 1988.

Maiden dropping RTTH or NOTB is a no-no though.

Re: Metallica at the O2

thats great they didn't play sandman. It's disappointing that when they played it at reading it seemed to be the only song 75% of the crowd new the words to and it's not even that good of a song it just has a simple structure and catchy riff which is why it appeals to the masses.

Which is incredibly hypocritical considering Metallica have always encouraged bootleg taping of thier shows, even so far as to provide special sections for bootleggers to film and record from..... Well I guess since the launch of Live Metallica site, where you can PAY to download live sets of the band, they probably want to halt the tapers so as to make more money

In fact it's even MORE hypocritical considering Metallica recently launched the "Metallica YouTube Channel" with Lars opening "welcome" speech saying how much the band enjoy users posting video's of Metallica, and videos of themselves (the users) playing metallica stuff, along with Metallica video's etc...

So to then publically state to fans to turn off camera's and not bother posting on YouTube is a bit stupid IMO

Metallica being hypocritical and downright stupid in respect to the distribution of their music isn't new

Re: Metallica at the O2

PMC - no I know it's not new, but it's a bit off (IMO) considering they actively encourage bootlegging for decades, and recently launched a YouTube channel FOR people to upload video clips to, then tell them not to at a gig!

Krish - People can enjoy a show in whatever for they want to. If someone wants to go there to film it, then thats how they enjoy it. How it affects other people is a knockon - like you used to be able to smoke in venues, now you can' as other people don't enjoy it, although it doesn't seem to matter that the people who want to smoke now can't enjoy that right. So it's swings and roundabouts. Did you also used to hate people holding their lighters up?

I've never seen the point videoing a gig on a phone, it looks and sounds like **** and you miss the whole concert staring into a phone.

I do however always get 3 or 4 pics of a band I see just so I can show people that I saw the band

Same here. I don't like it when venues tell you that you cannot take in a camera at all. I got about 20 pictures last night, and about 30 seconds of video. It is nice to have for the memories but I wouldn't want to watch an hour at that quality!

Highlights for me were One, MoP and Blackened, but I thought the new songs sounded great live - especially The Day That Never Comes.

It was a great performance, and one of the best gigs I have been to for a long time.
