What your musical taste says about you?

I'm sure this report is specific enough and how do you deal with sub genres etc, but the report has some interest.

humm, interesting read. Especially the link between metal and classical. My two favourite genres.

Here's a more detailed report from the Beep http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7598549.stm

"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."

I though this too and there's definitely some classical influences in some metal bands guitar work.

I think the writer has metal confused with emo

interesting ... but still another unremarkable wishy washy inconclusive and pretty unconvincing academic psycholology project, and I've seen a bunch of aimless and vacuous unscientific psychology PhD projects in my time

Really?

It is interesting, but as with so many things in these projects, the sampling, questioning, methodology leave a lot to be desired.

I must admit I had to laugh about both the stereotype and 'new conclusion' about heavy rock/metal fans.

I have, in my time, had a lot of friends into that musical genre and they crossed the whole spectrum of class, sex, and mental/physical makeup.

But hey, you don't expect a group of music fans the media don't like to be anything less than severely stereotyped do you?

and the thing about polls/surveys, even anonymous ones, is are people really being truthful? (would a football hooligan jazz fan or a badger baiting pop fan admit to it in a survey? )
... and then the type who actually have the time/inclination to complete these surveys possibly belong to a different mindset to those who are indifferent but still like the same music
... and what music can be classed as 'Indie' is always up for debate

Re: What your musical taste says about you?

I listen to rock, pop, classical jazz, soul and electronica, so what does that make me?

I think they'd have a field day with you, regardless of your musical tastes

Re: What your musical taste says about you?

I missed off hip-hop. Been in a retro mood lately with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Pink Floyd and Wu-Tang. Don't make music like that anymore these days

Re: What your musical taste says about you?

I agree with Krish and Overkill regards how these studies come about and are generally implemented. In this case, I think it could represent a certain catchment age more than others. Eg, teenagers are more likely to be steadfast in their support for certain groups and musical genres, but when you grow up you broaden your horizons.

At that age I was into "Indie" (or whatever category the Cure, Mission and Cult fell in) and Heavy Rock and would describe myself then as shy, but creative.

Re: What your musical taste says about you?

I read about a study similar to this but it said that different chemical balances in different peoples brains made them react to different frequencies, which seemed to make sense. There was also a link between Metal and Classical in that study. So it was the frequencies that the music produced that was the key - not the personalities.

Re: What your musical taste says about you?

i listen to a bit of everything it depends on my mood at the time so surely the study is incorrect?
