Metallica re-issues

This will not be of interest to most I know, but Metallica are re-issuing their albums on vinyl at the moment.

Crucially, as the recordings weren't great, on any format, these have been re-mastered, and better still been given the thumbs up by fans. Sorry, but I don't trust reviewers when it comes to re-mastered re-issues.

So far Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightening, are out already, while Master of Puppets has just been released.

For me, the latter is the one to buy.

Re: Metallica re-issues

I love the Metallica's reissued, more importantly they should re-record the bass on AJFA.

Re: Metallica re-issues

Was Ride ever released as a remastered cd? I still only have the original version on Music for Nations but I know it was re-released on a major but don't know if they did anything to it or if it's exactly the same as the version I already have.

Re: Metallica re-issues

Interesting..those 3 albums could be worth re-investing in. Nothing else they did matters .

I have a copy of the 12" gold vinyl Creeping Death on MFN from 1984[?]. That was pressed on heavy vinyl.

Very droll...................

There have been CD re-masters in the US, but these are very rare.

Yeah I have that too. I also have Ride the Lightening MFN picture disc and the original gatefold MFN re-releases of Kill em All and Puppets that were pressed as two records that played on 45.

If anyone has the Jump in the Fire pic disc or coloured vinyl that they would like to part with then please let me know!

I've got the Jump in the Fire pic disc but has a large split that runs about half way through it

Sorry, didn't want to start another metallica thread! Anyone got Death Magnetic yet? Do you agree with the current loudness issue? Never been a fan of Metallicas production on their records, this would be another knock if it's as bad as some people make out..

The loudness issue is one of the biggest problems in music. Not only does it remove the peaks (nuances) in tracks, it also makes a lot bands discs ear shredding.

If you slip the ole' wave across something like Sound Forge, ask for it to check for clipping - and the screen promptly gets covered in a sea of black lines tipped with yellow. That's not good. Each clip is a line, so if there's a lot of them......well.

A lot discs have been panned because of over loudness and compression.

Tbh it defeats the whole purpose of listening to it on good kit as all the fine points of the music are literally shut out. Which is the idea to some extent. The loudness factor is because the amount of ripping that takes place, and to make the disc/MP3 playable on the move.

I hope this isn't the case when I get the album!

I'll still waiting for a remaster of Justice, it would be great to finally hear that in all it's glory ! For me though it would have to be either CD or SACD as I don't have a turntable any more.

John, there is already a CD re-master, but it's very rare, and, as far as I know a US only release. People from here have picked it up, but that was a few years ago now and the cost may be prohibitive.

Check one of the disc sales search engines and see what comes up, or check the US version of fleabay.

Re: Metallica re-issues

When you say "remastered",...

I take it you mean properly and not the modern phenomenon of "hot records"; bumping every frequency to max and thus all the details are lost?

Just out of interest, weren't you impressed with the DVD-A of The Black Album?

I bought this for my wife last Christmas - and she seems very happy with it (which is the most important thing!). It's not quite my cup of tea - but it might grow on me!

Would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this (DVD-A) album.

I've been looking for this but couldn't find it for sale anywhere at a reasonable price. Where did you get it from ?

I got mine from either eBay or Amazon Marketplace, I can't quite remember. I'll happily check for you - although it'd probably make no difference now.
I bought it last November or December, I'm pretty sure from someone in the USA - New & Sealed -, for about £20.00 equivalent with P&P. I considered myself very lucky.

I'm constantly on the hunt for some hard to find DVD-As (given up with CDs for now), and recently managed to find Buena Vista Social Club - again from USA (Amazon Marketplace). That one was "Like New", for about £23.00 equivalent with P&P.

I really pays to keep checking if possible. Unfortunately (or is it fortunately) I work in an office with a computer - and check constantly. Well, almost constantly - I do actually do some work!

Interestingly enough though, I still have a copy of The Black Album on order from Amazon USA since May 2007 for USD 19.99. I'm happy to keep it on order (as it'd be easy to sell). I doubt I'll ever see it though.

I've just noticed there are two on eBay USA right now. One for USD 50.00 and the other USD 28.49, bidding ending on Sunday 21 September at 18:35 PDT for the latter.

Both of these are to be bidded for. Good luck if you go for them!

Thanks for that mate, but I never buy anything from ebay or the Amazon marketplaces. I just have never got into this ebay lark and so don't trust it

Thanks. So far I've had good experiences - although most of what I buy is straight from Amazon UK, US, Germany, France (and once Japan) - not Marketplace. I always look for a seller rating on eBay or Marketplace before ordering. Each to their own though!

I did actually have The Black Album on order once (for a long time) with www.dvd4music.co.uk, but that's a long story.

Good luck.

I have the vinyl 180g copy, and I'm happier with that than the DVD-A.

Having said that, the DVD-A is easily better than the CD version. The latter sounds thin and compressed by comparison. I'd say it's well worth seeking out for those without a vinyl solution.

John, it's only a suggestion, but I would persuade a m8 to bid for you on Fleabay if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself. As someone else on here said, if you want anything even remotely rare audio wise, Ebay is the place for it now.
