Big athemic arena power rock type stuff?

Not exactly sure what the specific name for the genre is, I guess it's mainly hair metal. To give you an idea of the type of stuff I like, here's some specific examples:

Scorpions - Wind of Change/Rock you like a Hurricane
Whitesnake - Here I go again
Def Leopard - Love Bites
Rainbow - I Surrender

Any other recommendations for bands/albums/specific songs would be greatly appreciated as my knowledge of this genre is limited but I do like the rocking guitars and big vocals

All the best.

Simon

Re: Big athemic arena power rock type stuff?

Journey are always a good bet for this kind of tune - their "Greatest Hits" is an almost safe blind buy, but they do have ballads which could curdle milk at ten paces, so forewarned is forearmed. "Anyway You Want It", "Open Arms" and "Don't Stop Believing" are good points to jump-in at.

I second the nomination for Van Halen - given the songs that you've listed, you might be better off pursuing the later, Sammy Hagar-fronted incarnation of the band (albums from "5150" onwards), which I know will be a somewhat controversial idea to many. "When It's Love", "Right Now" and "Humans Being" are representative examples of this era of the band, although their best stuff is definitely in the David Lee Roth era - 1978 to 1984 and intermittently in the 00's

How about more home-grown bands, too? Thunder's albums may be up your alley, Stone Gods (the Darkness minus Justin Hawkins) and a copy of "Classic Rock" magazine may be of assistance (the cover CD is also good for finding new bands to listen to).

Also? Planet Rock on DAB radio is your friend.

Best of luck!

Re: Big athemic arena power rock type stuff?

There was a compilation in the 80's called American Heartbeat that had a lot of this type of music on (Survivor, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Asia etc). That particular release has long since been deleted, but here in all it's glory is a replacement with the same title.

American Heartbeat

There is some big arena stuff on here, but it may not have the guitar 'crunch' you might want.

Edit..
There are many similar compilations, they usually go under the name of 'Dad Rock', or 'Best Rock Ever' or 'Best Jukebox Ever' etc, they are cheap enough to scratch the itch.

Another recommendation for Planet Rock.

On a more modern note, check out Muse and Wolfmother.

Re: Big athemic arena power rock type stuff?

I thoroughly recommend the debut album by Dare. If you like Journey et al, then this is an absolutely brilliant album!!

other mentions, ....definitely Thunder, Boston (3rd Stage album a particular fav), Van Halen (Roth -era), .....too many, off to look at my tape collection

Re: Big athemic arena power rock type stuff?

I've had Out of The Silence and Blood from Stone since they were released and didn't know Dare made any more,M then a few months ago found they had made quite a few so i searched them out and bought them. I think BFS is the worst, but the others are very close to OOTS.
