I remember buying the Black Album and then working backwards through to Master and Ride the Lightning.......it was at these two albums that I suddenly went whoaaa!! whats going on here, this is far more animated and fresh......I had no idea at the time about Cliff Burton. Those albums taught me the difference between what a melodic bass player adds to a band compared with a straight up rythmn player.
I have noticed that something happens when you have to have a melodic bassist to counter balance a strong rythmn six string player and vica verca. Pretty much worked that way with Nirvana. Novoselic was a melodic player and Kurt was a rythmn player and there are many more examples.
Novoselic then formed a band with ex-meat puppets guitarist Kurt Kirkwood. Both were melodic players....both were great.......it didn't work.
Anyway, back to 'tallica.........after Ciff died they tried with Justice and struggled until they fell in with the very talented Micheal Kamen (do some reading and the direction they took and the sound they made becomes more to do with MK than anything else). St Anger seemed to be a return to doing it themselves.......and it really isn't great.
Back to Kamen this time ?
