Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts

Always loved Placebo. Every track on every album just has something about it that hooks you in. This new album is no exception. In fact, Brian and the boys are on top form here. The album is mostly mellow and emotive, yet the "non-mainstream" melodies are surprisingly catchy, even on first listening.

Pure class. Very highly recommended.

I saw Placebo live in Bristol on their first album tour and I have to admit, they absolutely rocked the place. Much, much better than I thought they'd be.

Brian Molko does have a knack for writing immensly catchy power pop tunes. I guess they fill the void for all those who loved Trent Reznor's stuff circa 'Pretty Hate Machine' but found the later NIN stuff a bit too heavy/industrial.

Got a bit of a pasting in the music rags ( whats new), I have one album the self titled Placebo which is pretty good, dont play it a lot but they certainly rock. I put them in the same catergory as Skunk Anansie, which is no bad thing.

Dont think I will be buying it, cos I seem to be turning into a country / folky

I should change my Avatar to more accurately represent my current fad, perhaps a beard and Arran jumper would be a start

Placebo
The White Stripes half of the time, the other half is tip top stuff.

Then again I like Linkin Park, so obviously I have no taste in music whatsoever

I cannot comment, but cast your ears around Elephant, I dont think you will be disappointed.

Stop listening to nu metal and get down with some folky stuff

Or make a start with some Neil Young

I shall refrain from posting anything abusive about the inbred Stripesters. Oooh whoops, couldn't help myself

In all seriousness, I see no musical similarity between Placebo and WS.

I can't be disapointed with Elephant as, after the first White Stripes album, I barely have expectations that it will be music, so they can only impress me. Which they wont. Placebo are ok, did a decent version of Big Mouth Strikes Again, my favorite Smiths song. But their stuff is a little bit samey, maybe it's his voice, I dunno.

Well, when set out on a sheet of paper, it looks like music.

Hmm, look like music, smell like music, must be Incubus!

Karkus, no more Folk, sitting in a car with my dad -

Will stick to old Grunge and Indie for my more relaxed moments.

No Karkus, I was subjected to 30 minutes of grass roots folk music as dubbed from 1/4" reel 2 reel to cassette using only the worst, most folky interconnects possible.

Please let's not get started about the god who walks amongst lesser musicians and calls himself Dave Grohl.

I think you're spot on there... the band is limited by Molko's voice, which is always the same. Good in some ways, as they're instantly recognisable, but does tend to make their stuff all sound similar.

I get the same feeling with Cypress Hill, despite their songs being different and quite diverse, the guys voice is their hook.

Agree again. 'Black Sunday' was a classic, after that they always seemed to be chasing former glories and I think that was, as you say, down to B-Real's voice being the key identifier.

See, you know all their names
I think they're the two major offenders that I know of, it seems whatever is underneath their tracks doesn't matter to me, all I can hear is the voice and it makes me think "samey". Even with something like Rival Schools' "United by Fate", which features a lot of similar guitar riffs, I can appreciate each song for what it is after giving it due listening (incidentally, it's an ace album/debut- bleeding edge emo). The only band that springs to mind where the guitar riffs sound really samey is RATM ( flame on)

Most bands sound 'samey' (including Incubus). It's what gives each band their unique sound.

Placebo's songs are far from being all very similar though, but they might appear so at first. One a few more listens though, it's easy to tell them apart (a bit like with identical twins)

Karkus - Placebo's first album (the self-titled one) is not their best so don't let your feelings about that one influence your feelings about the rest of 'em dude

Thats what we're saying- but Placebo and Cypress are two main offenders in my eyes. Most people won't give bands they consider "samey" the time needed to begin to distinguish the nuances and subtlties of each track because they think "oh, it's all the same".

Just playing it now -- 3 tracks in and I like what I hear A LOT. So far, it's appears more 'conventional' than 'Kid A' and 'Amnesiac'...perhaps a logical progression on from those 2. (NB my favourite Radiohead albums are 'The Bends' and 'Amnesiac')
