Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

Now, here is a band that easily slipped by me totaly un-noticed and with good reason.

1. They are Christian metallers.........wait, wait, its really OK, they really stick to playing music and having lyrics that examine their own psyche, much like any band. That Christian tag was almost enough for me, but you should judge a book by it's contents.

2. Now here's a thing, they have been blamed for the whole grunge movement.........and your going to say, eh, what, thought you said metal, melodic and rock and and and Christian. Well I did and when you take a listen you will discover there is quite a lot of Pearl Jam, which I dispute is truly grunge but really hard rock.

So, we have a band that plays Beatleque melodies, funk, folk, metal and rock. Its not one for the hardcore metallist, or for the hardcore rock fan, it sort of fits everywhere and nowhere at all. Most sites proclaim " Cruelly ignored, totally underated, should have been mainstream"

Well I have resisted the urge to buy anything, but thought I should throw this open to you enlightened lot.......Have a listen to 'out of the silent planet' on the album Gretchen goes to Nebraska.

I saw King X live many moons ago, supported by Mindfunk. Kings X were a great live band. They could all sing too. Dogman was a good album.

I've recently caught up with a band I missed out in the 90's. I Mother Earth. Very good stuff. Check it out.

First I've ever heard of Kings X being blamed for the Grunge Movement, given that their first album was out about 3 or 4 years before Grunge took hold or was even muttered. Where is this written or talked about?

(though, ironically, King’s X were partly responsible for inspiring grunge; Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament once said, “King’s X invented grunge”).

I dont think it was true 'grunge'. It was more hard rock IMO, which was really what PJ were about, they just happened to be linked with the grunge movement.

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

Brilliant band, the only album I dislike is "Faith, Love and Hope". I haven't bought anything since Tapehead though (except the live album from a couple of years back), I think they've release 3 or 4 studio albums since then I really must buy them.

Ty Tabor is possibly one of the greatest guitarists to walk this earth

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

Loved Kings X throughout the 90's since hearing "Gretchen goes to Nebraska", great guitar sound, but struggled to get into the post 2000 stuff.

Great shout on Mindfunk above, Big House Burning is one of my favourite songs, shame they faded away.

Their 2nd album, Dropped is one of my all time favourites. It's great, well worth checking out if you missed it.

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

dogman, Tape Head, and Gretchen were all good albums. The last one Ogre Tones wasn't bad either. Seen 'em live a few times and they are spectacular at times - the sound the reproduce for a 3 piece is phenomenal (there's a thread in itself...classic trios!)

the outro to "We were born to be loved" live is just amazing!!

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

One of my favourite bands I've never got to see. As above, Dogman is probably my favourite track but hearty recommendations from me also for:

The World Around Me, Over My Head, King, We Are Finding Who We Are, Shot of Love and Moanjam. As you may be able to tell, the later stuff has pretty much passed me by - Ear Candy was the last CD I bought.

I remember reading in a Pearl Jam article that Eddie Vedder did a local radio show in a US town after playing a gig and the track he asked them to play was Cigarettes by Kings X. There was clearly some love for the band in the PJ camp - perhaps they toured together?

Highly recommended.

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

Kings X are listed as the support act for Extreme's new "World Tour", although so far the only non-USA gig appears to be Milan!

They have a new album out called "XV". It's at No145 in the US chart.

Re: Kings X melodic metal rock stuff

Another christian rock band I prefer a lot more than Kings X is Trouble.
A few years ago they got together and made an album under the name of Supershine and it is awesome.
