Hi Brian
Well around 1975 ish when I was 14 I stared listening to Yes... Then I read an interview with Jon Anderson who said that they were inspired, amongst others, by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. What a strange name I thought; anyway, I went and bought a second hand copy of Birds Of Fire, and it blew me away. Then onto McLaughlin's inspirations - Miles, Coltrane etc, and I guess it just grew from there.
So lots of McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, and some older stuff - Dizzy and Duke Ellington.
I was a real jazz snob in the late seventies, early eighties, but now I like a pretty wide range of stuff.
A bit like you - If I liked an album, I'd see who the sidemen where and go hear there own stuff. It could often lead in pretty unpredictable directions - especially some of the guys Zappa played with!
I guess I have a soft spot for the music which changed my way of listening, so that is why that site is like gold dust to me (and it is still working for me, by the way

)
