Fans of Porcupine tree/Tool/Dream Theater

Well, who would have guessed there is another band that seems happily to combine aspects of each band. Its nothing new, but if you are fans of melodic/metal/prog blah blah blah then a band called Riverside will probably appeal big time. Try the new album Rapid Eye Movement.........as opposed to the new REM release called........

http://www.myspace.com/riversidepl go have a play.

Re: Fans of Porcupine tree/Tool/Dream Theater/Pink Floyd

I shall have to reply to myself then After a couple of spins I am really liking this. Again, its nothing really new, but the combinations of other styles is really great to listen to. No growling vocals either, in parts it could be Peter Gabriel or Mark Hamill. The music really does traverse every creed of progressive music, there's Tool, perfect Circle, King Crimson, VDG, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Faith No More, Pink Floyd...............for Gods sake there's even a hammond in there somewhere making it all very authentic and totally modern at the same time.

The Bass playing is really funky, some great riffs, acoustic guitar arpeggios..........it really has the whole 9 yards without any bombast.

Some say its another "Wish you were Here".......but I think its different enough to be its own master.

I'll reply to you!!

I like it, in fact I bought it today.

From what I've heard so far it's good. I'll give it a proper listen soon, I enjoyed what I heard on the way home though.

It would explain the dark nature of the songs and the deep and sinister vocals.
Maybe that's what 'Masks' is about.

I like Riverside's Second Life Syndrome too - in fact its the middle of the Reality Dream trilogy starting with Out of Myself and ending with Rapid Eye Movement

Re: Fans of Porcupine tree/Tool/Dream Theater

Thought id give my impressions, ive listened to the album about twice now. The lead singers voice reminds me of Gavin Rossdale from Bush (no bad thing), the opening track is great, maybe not on par with the likes of tool/opeth but has a great riff and great melodic vocals halfway through. To be honest i think the album loses its way after the first track, theres not enough grunt to the rest of the songs, lacks energy is probably the best way i can put it. Then again i might be too familiar with Tool & Opeth.
Thanks to the op for recommending them though, the first track is definately worth getting the album for.

Liking the bass, nice and deep without sounding like Korn, will definitely give these a listen.

Re: Fans of Porcupine tree/Tool/Dream Theater

Well I listened to some Riverside on LastFM and thought 'hmm..not bad' but never ordered them. Tool and DT are one thing but (on the admittedly limited listening I've had to them) Porcupine Tree always seemed a little too 'light'?

(Not really related but have just got a album by 'Tank86' called Behold. Instrumental heavy rock and I think you can get their first album (ep) as a free download from their site).

Scenes From A Memory runs a close 2nd to Awake imho

PS: Thanks for the myspace link...listening again now

Porcupine Trees sound differs from album to album. I admit they're not as heavy as Tool but they can produce some brilliant riffs and can go dark and moody when they want to (just listen to Deadwing or Fear of a Blank Planet), im seeing them in london in october, cant wait!
