This forum is supposed to be about music but it doesn't seem to have much range. I'm heavily into Country & Western but can't find any mention of it elsewhere.

I'm a member of the Cambridge Coyotes and we meet once a week at the Catholic Church Parish Hall in Union Road, Cambridge to listen to the best in C&W whilst practicing both square and line dancing.

Surely there must be some other real music lovers out there

My name is a Gordon Fraser and I am a Country and Western fan...

It all started in early 90's when Sky had the CMT channel on analogue. Oh how I loved Reba's BIG hair...it was BIG music. Bigger than Metal anyday. To this day I bet Reba McIntire could kick Jon Bon Jovi's ass in a BIG hair competition!

Actually I do like country. I have plenty of country records. Johnny Cash is GOD. His daughters are pretty great as well....and Rodney Crowell....too many to list....

I am a huge C&W fan. Watch the CMA's every year without fail. Some of my favourites are. George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Tim McGraw and Mindy McCreedy. I must admit that I am more of a New Country fan than the older Blue Grass sounding music.

I'm not a fan of traditional Country and Western but there is a wave of music classed as 'Alt Country' which is great.

Maybe some of you traditional fans should check out The Handsome Family

Dixie Chicks HDCD discs sound fab (via a HDCD decoder), much better than modern music - on the recording quality.

Not bad album.

Nothing wrong with C&W Music, Dolly Parton is great. Some of Shania Twains (hottie! ) tracks are C&W based.

Billy Ray Cyrus is the only C&W artist I can take seriously. The others are all too 'fake' with those accents and their clothing etc.

Hank Williams in Class Lyrics thread, a Ryan Adams poll and plenty of country stars in Favourite Female Vocalist thread, plus a nod to Gram Parsons / Emmylou Harris, Grievous Angel, O Brother Where Art Thou ?, Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch and others.
Authentic Bluegrass and New Country are my favourites, alongside Eagles, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Outlaws, Willie Nelson, and Shania :kisses: Twain.
Country & Western covers a whole lot of music these days, man.

I can recommend the latest Johnny Cash album (The Man Comes Around). It's awesome, and it's pretty poignant as he recorded it after being diagnosed as having inoperable cancer.

As for a live album, you definitely won't regret buying Live at St Quentin. An audience of prisoners? No wonder they're so excited.

I saw the programme on Hank Williams, as I have been listening to a lot of country influenced band recently (Calexico, lambchop and The Meat Puppets) his earthy, hard hitting style suddenly made a lot of sense and I was intrigued by the music. So which one to buy??? theres hundreds of albums , mostly compilations.

The new Johnny Cash album was of interest, always liked his early stuff, can remember buying 45 (remember that ) just for the lyrics to 'This thing called love'.

No idea. Often thought that I should take the plunge with one of them one day.

The reason there's so many of them is that a lot of his music has passed the 50-year-copyright-thingy-law so no royalties to pay or something......that's the reason they're all so cheap.

Good, but not as good as Calexico.

I really liked the Hank Williams stuff, I was a bit suprised as C & W has never really appealed, but his music was in a different class.

Same with blues, most of it leaves me cold, but I like the older stuff by Leadbelly, haunting music.

It all got softened and commercialised, took away the art of one man telling about his inner struggles and emotional pain, you can almost feel your there.

Ella Fitzgeralds the same, I have clap hands here comes charlie on audiophile vinyl. The moment the needle hits the groove, Im in a smokey Manhatten Nightclub.

Next it will be Leonard Cohen, Ive already started looking.

Johnny Cash "Live at San Quentin" and the earlier "Live at Folsom Prison" are both essential albums - even for non-country fans. Both recently remastered in extended versions from Sony Music - at mid-price too.

By the way, the prefered title for the genre is "Country" - call it "Country and Western" in the USA and they'll hang you out to dry!

Just getting started. I've bought Dixie Chicks' Home and Gillian Welch's Time (The Revelator) this week.

I'm so new to country I don't even know what the music I like is called. But I do love it and I'll be buying a lot more albums in future.
