Joy Division

Any recommendations for their best 2 or 3 albums ?

I know their ' best of ' is due out soon.

Cheers

Re: Joy Division

They only released 2 studio albums - Unknown Pleasures and Closer. They are both equally amazing.

Re: Joy Division

don't forget about 'Still' their live complilation & Substance which contains the classic Atmosphere. though 'Ceremony' off Still the Heart & Soul Boxset is amazing, one of my favourite New Order tracks made even better given the raw & passionate tones of Ian Curtis live, really wished he'd studio recorded that one. well properly not just a demo.

advice to the OP, get them all, it's hardly gonna break the bank if you shop around & if you like Joy Divison none of them will disappoint. Unknown Pleasures/Closer/Still/Substance, Oh & the Live Peel Session as well (really like that one). all are superb.

Re: Joy Division

If you get Heart and Soul, you get both the studio albums, plus a lot of the better known alternative studio versions, etc, that you're likely to need. There are some live tracks as well. I find JD far more enjoyable in the studio where there was a bit more discipline imposed, but other folks like the harsher and less constrained quality of their gigs.

If you get into JD then it's worthwhile getting Factory Records: The Complete Graphic Album for the artwork of the albums and 12 inch singles, which by and large is glorious. Other than the Pet Shop Boys, there's probably no band that has been better served by the graphic designers working on their products.

Re: Joy Division

The Peel sessions have certainly been available separately in the past. However, the current Best Of compilation contains them all on one disc and at a lower price than you're likely to pay for a second hand dedicated issue of the Peel Sessions (and with a much better cover!). As to what they're like - they're different from the other versions, sometimes subtly, sometimes more obviously. But they are a must-hear if you are getting into the band. Having said that, you should also listen to the Piccadilly Radio (a Manchester commercial station) sessions available on Heart and Soul for the same reason.

For a full rundown on the JD discography, videos, etc (and trust me, once you start, you're in for a long haul before you track everything down) try: Joy Division Central

xBox and now music

Personally i cant stand the band ,Manchester at the time was in serious depression and ironically Joy Division brought them out of it (how did that work )

IMHO they had two reasonable hits and that was it . Nirvana anyone ?

I moved to Manchester a year after Ian Curtis's death and I can promise you Manchester was still in a depression for a lot of the eighties. I know that people now think the eighties was like one long Wham! video, but up north it was grim and any potentially fun activity had to be scrutinised by the political correct thought police first. You can have no idea how DULL it all was. Just forget the image presented by 24 Hour Party People - outside a tiny coterie of the painfully hip, the rest of us were bored. Oh, and the Hacienda was pants.

JD are a Marmite band - you either love or hate them.

Re: Joy Division

Got in HMV and the "Heart and Sole" set had gone so I had to settle for the 2 cd best of Joy Division got it on the 2 for £10 offer

@ andrew markwort: Madchester..late 80's early 90's the myth is probably a lot better than it actually was,

I got in to Joy Division after seeing them on the Oxford Road show (late 70's/early 80's) a music magazine show on BBC2 which then led me on to all things New Order...who else
