Seal: Kiss from a Rose on the Grey: or Grave?

I sang Kareoke tonight, and I sang Seal: Kiss from a Rose. The words came up..

Kiss from a Rose On The Grey.. I was a bit taken aback!

I always thought it was Kiss From A Rose On The Grave. Which sounds better, and makes more sense to me.

So I thought I had better print the lyrics, and learn them before the next Kareoke. But I find two lots of lyrics. Some with Grey, and some with Grave.

How does Grey make any sense?

I need interpretations, opinions..

Somebody posted on another site.. watch his mouth, and he says Grave clearly, but on many other sites they argue that it's Grey.

I'm confused.. but I really like the song.

I love this song and I have always thought it was grave. Never heard of it being grey before. Makes no sense to me

Re: Seal: Kiss from a Rose on the Grey: or Grave?

"a kiss from a rose" doesn't make much sense anyway, but "a rose on a grave" makes some sense whereas "a rose on a grey" makes no sense

maybe the words are in the cd booklet? i think he had a hits cd too, so it might be in that if it's not in the original album

the kareoke could be wrong, it depends on where they get the lyrics. the reissued beck cd last week had the wrong lyrics as someone googled them up from a website and printed them!

I think it might actually be Grey, as he refers to a Grey Tower.

Yep, had a listen, does sound like Grey, not Grave.

A metaphor for something or other no doubt

Re: Seal: Kiss from a Rose on the Grey: or Grave?

Anybody know if the words were ever printed in an album sleeve? I personally have to go for Grey until I get more confirmation, because too many sites say grey. But he doesn't finish his words, and there are other shortened words in the song......

I've got the original album and his greatest hits and neither have the words I'm afraid.

Well, I've sent an email to SEAL's official site to see if they can respond.

I doubt they will able to help. On the liner notes for that album Seal states in answer to 'why don't you print your lyrics':

"Well, the answer to that is that quite often my songs mean one thing to me and another to the listener. But that's ok because I think it's the general vibe of what I'm saying that is important and not the exact literal translation. How many times have you fallen in love with a lyric that you though went, 'show me a day with Hilda Ogden and I'll despair', only to find that it went 'show me a way to solve your problems and I'll be there'. I guess what I'm saying is that the song is always larger in the listeners mind because with it they attach imagery which is relative to their own personal experience. So it is your perception of what I'm saying rather than what I actually say that is the key"

That doesn't sound to me like he wants to end any mystique for you.

His words are hard to hear properly. I downloaded the lyrics to 'Crazy', and I thought it was 'Get A lid On Crazy', but it's 'Get A little Crazy' So I suppose his quote is pretty apt to his own way of singing. Also did a different Kareoke (Kiss from a Rose again) last night, and the words were 'Kiss from a rose on the grave.', but another difference was 'the light that you shine can't be seen' instead of 'can be seen'

Re: Seal: Kiss from a Rose on the Grey: or Grave?

reminds me of the Purple Haze 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky' / 'Scuse me while I kiss this guy' confusion
- Hendrix mischievously sang 'Scuse me, while I kiss that guy' live on a number of occasions
