Multi channel music recommendations

Hi all, i am looking for some recommendation of music to listen too that is multichannel (sacd, dvd-A, DD or DTS). My interests (for multi channel) are mostly electronica like jean michael jarre and tangerine dream. I also liked Dire straits 'money for nothing' and War of the worlds. Not really interested in concert/Live recordings or classical.

Thanks

Steve

For TD there isn't much tbh. I think Rubycon on SACD is the only one thus far.

I enjoy the 5.1 DTS on Steely Dan's Everything Must Go, but then Becker n' Fagen can do no wrong in this house.

Hi, Dark Side of the Moon on SACD is excellent. Shame about the limited availability of material. regards stasis.

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

If you want to listen to 5.1 at it's best try any of the Porcupine Tree stuff. Most of their music was produced and recorded with 5.1 in mind right from the start and it shows.

isn't that only in stereo, though

I'll second Beatles LOVE and all Porcupine Tree releases

5.1 electronica
ERA - Greatest hits SACD (this is like Enigma)
BT - This Binary Universe DVD-V
John Michel Jarre - Aero.

not heard these two but apparently they are good
Tipper - Surrounded
Crystal Method - Legion of Boom

for extremely minimalist ambient electronica
Bass Communion has a DVD-A and another coming out soon

Other rock issues
Rush's new album is in MVI format with a 5.1 mix

Favourite surround mixes
Roxy Music - Avalon
Pink Floyd - DSOTM
Porcupine Tree (All of 'em)
Steely Dan - Everything Must Go
Blue Man Group - Audio

take a look at AIX Records too

I know you don't want concerts - but JMJ has this JMJ in China which is quite good - it was performed in surround. And the Porcupine Tree Arriving Somewhere live DVD has an awesome surround mix on top of great sonics.

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

I'd definately recommend The Beatles "Love" DVD-A. Like so many others, I'm totallt bowled over by Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon SACD. Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" SACD is also incredible.

Not one for live music recordings either, I would recommend though you try to get a copy of Kraftwerk's Minimum:Maximum Live SACD. It's such a pity that there aren't some Tangerine Dream examples, Ricochet in h-res (preferably MCH) is just what this album is crying out for. Now that's another live album that I rate very highly. How about Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003 DVD-A.

I can highly recommend Tomita's The Planets 2003 DVD-A, and Kitaro's Daylight:Moonlight Live SACD.

Good luck in your search!

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

The Altogether by Orbital was made as a 5.1 album from the ground up and is available on DVD . lots of trippy visuals and hidden extras on the isc and a 5.1 version of the Doctor

Some of the jarre albums are good to. Theres a really strage track on his latest album thats awesome in 5.1

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

Pink Flodys SACD is good but the DVD A of the Alan Parsons 4.1 mix is the best
Also good is the wish you were here and animals dts copies
Bjork Vespertine and Nirvana nevermind DTS copies are good as well.
I agree there is not enough surround music out there but just type in dts or 5.1 on Pirate Bay and you get a few results ,my DTS collection now numbers 21 albums

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

I have recently updated my whole home cinema and was looking to get some DVD-A and SACD but from what i can see the choice is very limited. The majority of stuff available is mostly symphonic, jazz and old stuff. The choice of SACD is a lot more limited than DVD-A too. Is there a particular reason for this? Are these formats on the way to extinction? I am presuming that what you find on Amazon is basically all that is available to date in these 2 formats.

Anyone knows what Rambient and Venice Underground sound like?

There is a better selection if you go to the US websites, some of which have been posted here before (so do a search as it's quicker than waiting for us to get into gear ), and you might be surprised how many you can find.

However, hi-res is indeed dead in the water. The problem from the start was that they a) chose to release them right at the real take-off point for music downloads, and in age were quantity reigns, it wasn't the best of times to do it, b) they went for re-releases first, then as an afterthought tried to get current artists to release on hi-res.

The former meant they were swimming against the tide from the off, and added to the latter, that the majority of artists weren't willing to take the risk of investing in releasing on hi-res rather than just CD.

As with HD-CD the public also just didn't see the need (bar us hifi nuts, and were are a small minority of the 'music replay' buying public) for a new digital medium.

I too have recently upgraded my AV set-up (beginning of last year), to a player that can play both hi-res formats. Although my previous player was just an ordinary Sony DVD video player, I have bought only 1 CD in almost 3 years, preferiing to buy only DVD-As. Now that I have a proper hi-res universal disc player, I have started buying SACDs also. My experiences appear to differ from yours, in that I get the opposite impression. I often feel that there are a lot more SACDs available than DVD-As, although I am able to find lots that I'm interested in. I generally find Amazon UK to be quite good, although I have bought from Amazon Germany, USA and Japan also. I feel that Amazon USA is not as good as it used to be, and they don't make it as easy to search for the hi-res formats as they used to - not that Amazon UK is 100% watertight. Try. for example looking under "DVD Audios" for The Beatles "Love" album. I have also recently heard that Sony are re-releasing their entire SACD collection. I have no idea how accurate the source of this information was, but have faith in it.

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

Steve is correct. According to most of the music media, SACD actually quite heavily outnumbers DVD-A in terms of releases.

Which is a shame. It has much greater potential as a media.

I couldn't agree more about your views on DVD-A. What I really don't understand, is why DVD-A and SACD have to be seen as "competing" formats. Although both offering hi-res sound, they offer slightly different content. There's surely room for both!!!??? I'm not even sure (slightly moving away from the main theme of this thread), that it's all down to multi-channel music, more to do with aiming as high as possible quality wise.

I have an absolutely wonderful Arcam DV137 player, and I'm so impressed with both DVD-A and SACD, that my hi-res collection is growing strongly. Perhaps I'm odd, but I can't see how others are not as equally convinced.

Steve i probably didnt express my self properly. What i meant was that in general there isnt much choice in the two formats as far as modern music is concerned. You can get plenty of "old stuff" like Beatles and Rolling Stones and a lot from that band called "Can". And the majority of stuff seems to be rock n roll, jazz or classical. As far as Heavy metal, techno, trance, hardcore etc etc there isnt much choice. And is based on these strands of music that i made the comparison between DVD-A and SACD. And the comparison is also based on Amazon.co.uk stocks.

Slightly off topic but i thought to post a warning here. Quite a few of the private sellers that sell SACD on Amazon.co.uk seem to sell normal cds. They probably dont realise that it is a SACD format where they have put their listing. So it is best to contact the seller before you buy to clarify.

Re: Multi channel music recommendations

I got the Elvis DVD-A for a fiver...and I must admit it's rather good, especially the outakes...

The Beatles DVD-A mix is very good also.

Jean M Jarre's Aero 5.1 mix is also another stunner...

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac' Live at the BBC' DVD-A is absolute class...

I'd agree Amazon USA is a bit of a nightmare, but it's worth time if you're looking for a specific title that's not available over here.

First, why would you? Stereo and multi channel offer different things to different people. I don't particularly enjoy multi-channel, I find it wearing now the novelty has worn off, and listen to my hi-res disc's in Stereo 90% of the time. It takes a really good mix to hold my attention, and then only with certain types of music. Electronic music is fine with multi-channel (the Jarre examples a good one), rock, I loathe it.

There is a method for mixing to multi channel, but it isn't DTS, and there is no way of sorting the bass channel properly. But then that's a common criticism even of 'proper' multi channel discs. It's really just stereo mixed into four channels. The process is also complex and isn't guaranteed to work. I will post a link to it if you want to try?

You can up mix to create a true DVD-A using software thats readily available, but again that's in stereo, not 5.1.

Again, I agree with you. It's another good reason why they deserve to survive, I feel, as they offer choice. I have one DVD-A that offers compressed and lossless versions in mono, stereo and 5.1. My wife sisn't overly keen on the 5.1 mix, but likes the mono or stereo versions. All except one of my SACDs offer a stereo mix, apart from one of my latest, which is in mono only. There are a few DVD-As I have, however, which claim on the sleeve notes to offer a stereo version, but in fact do not.

for sacd visit http://www.sa-cd.net/
for DVD-A http://dvd-a.info/

You'll also find Classic Records DAD/HDAD format (24b/192kHz hirez stereo in the Video_TS area only)

There's a new MVI format with hirez stereo, some with DD or DTS multichannel mixes (Rush, Chicago, Matchbox 20, Paramore to name a few)

Actually, in my last posting I should have said that I agree with you as far as "stereo and multi channel offer different things to different people", but I'm someone that is (so far) actually very impressed with multi-channel music.

Not that it'll mean anything to the music industry, but I also feel that the hi-res formats are the way ahead. I am unable to think of any reason why most music should not be released on SACD or DVD-A, and let the humble CD slowly die out (at least as far as most music is concerned). Unfortunately, people that really appreciate high quality music seem to be in a minority. I suspect most people just "hear" music, and don't actually "listen" to it.

Is anybody able to recommend any hi-res (preferably multi-channel) classical music? Or how about any of the Kitaro SACDs? I've had the "Daylight-Moonlight Live" SACD since Christmas, and think it's really great!
