These can't be explained! It's the same as having Death Metal, Grunge Metal, Heavy Metal. It's all the same, but with the metal stuff its all proper musicians playing their own instruments rather than all the stuff you mentioned where they just turn on a synth and go out for lunch, then relase what happened when they see the results. IMO all of this kind of music is utter rubbish, electronic and synthesised with no real input from any kind of artist. The different names for it have been invented to pigeon hole it according to beats per minute and exactly how high on drugs the perople who listen to it should be to enjoy it.

I think Harry says it perfectly. Just noticed you forgot the "c" at the beginning of "rap"

electronic and synthesised

Whereas metal music is ok because it only uses overdrives, distortion, flangers, wha-wahs, amplifiers which arent electronic and synthesized?

A typical response from someone who confuses dance music for the crap they hear in the charts, on the radio and in the trendy nightclubs, ie. full of nonsense.

Apt as a description for pop music the above might be, but as a description for true dance music, just an utter load of bull****. Try some Roni Size or Lemonjuice, or get out into the community and take a listen to the nation's rich underground dance scene. These people are true artists, because they use a different medium to create their art does not take away their credence.

And I say that as a rock/metal fan.

For those particularly into any of the below, I'm not saying this is the absolute definition of the styles, rather a (hopefully) simple enough introduction to each:

1. HIP HOP - US originated Breakbeat based, samples, can contain rapped and sung vocals... think De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, A Tribe Called Quest. Slightly more of a traditional 'song' type arrangement than :

2. RAP - US originated rapped vocals over stripped down breakbeat, or beatbox rhythms. Think Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Notorious BIG.

3. D&B - UK orginated, name speaks for itself, deep sub bass used almost as an instrument in it's own right with (usually) fast, 'cut-up' drum beats and breaks. Can also contain MC's vocals and sung vocals. Think Goldie, Reprazent, Dillinja.

4. TRANCE - UK/European originated. Heavily synth based, usually with strings over driving electronic drum patterns. Also tends to feature 'breakdowns' and is often designed to make the most of the effects of the, ahem, ecstatic feelings some listeners will experience. The word 'euphoric' describes how a lot of trance tends to sound. Think Blank & Jones, Binary Finary, Energy 52, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold.

5. GOAN TRANCE - Euro/Mediterranean originated. Tends to be a more techno based, psychedelic version of the above. Think Astral Projection, Sven Vath and our old friend Paul Oakenfold

6. HOUSE - US originated but now coming from just about everywhere. The kind of 'normal' dance music you'll hear in just about every mainstream pub and club. House music has been around so long and has so many of it's own varients that it's hard to pin down to any particular performers or artists as representative of the whole 'house' music movement.

7. GARAGE - UK orginated. Almost a combination of rap, house and drum & bass. Usually with heavily (London based) UK accents on the vocals. Can range from fairly hardcore to the tripe of Artful Dodger, Craig David etc. So Solid Crew are probably the most well known exponents.

8. JUNGLE - UK originated. Not a million miles from Drum and Bass, tends to feature fast drum/breakbeat patterns and either MC's or properly 'sung' female vocals. Think DJ Hype, DJ Rap, Kenny Ken.

There's a ton of other genres and sub-genres of dance music, Old Skool, Hard House, Hardcore, Happy Hardcore, Techno etc. etc.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what it is as long as you like it

I believe that as it's evolved through the late 90's and early 00's, it's now changed beyond it's original format and is now referred to as 'Portaloo'... cos it's played mainly in sh*thole clubs
