Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

for me, Master Of Puppets, nothing they have done since comes close.
And Justice For All was a great album but suffered from bad production.
Black album yes a Classic too but a little too comercial, some brilliant solo's from KH.
Load and Reload, both patchy but also have some awesome tracks.
St Anger, brilliant songs and would have been a bone fide classic had the production had been spot on.
Lets also not forget Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning, 2 great albums that built up to MOP.

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

And Justice for All.

My cousin bought the record round about a week after release, a double if I recall. I hadn't heard them before, 'One' blew me away, so I've him to blame. I bought all albums since, but think that AJFA just brings back that 'first impact' effect.

I would like my cousins vinyl, but he ain't parting with it, it's better than my CD.

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Justice is my favourite as well, if only I could get a good sounding version of this ...... I think we've discussed this problem of the "below standard" sound quality of Justice before and there would be a few of us interested in a good re-release

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Master of Puppets is the best Metallica album. there is not one duff track on it. its a flawless album. a definitive heavy metal release.

...And justice for all is flawed because of the 'no bass guitar' production and some weaker tracks.

the black 'crossover' album had a 4 or 5 great tracks (tracks 1,2,5,6 and 7) but had far too much filler in my opinion. i can remember at the time thinking the only redeeming feature of 'unforgiven' and 'nothing else matters' were the awesome solos. ive normally turned it off by 'my friend of misery' and 'struggle within' (2 very poor tracks).

i never really followed anything they did after that. what i have heard was rubbish.

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Maybe a controversial choice but I'm going for Garage Inc. I know its a covers record but there are some cracking tunes on there. The 2nd disk especially has some cracking metal/punk tunes. 'So What' is an all time favourite.

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

being a huge metallica fan,(saw them at Wembley recently) i love all their albums.although each album has its duff tracks and its share of classics.
the one album that stands out above the rest for me is "Master of Puppets"

awesome from start to finish.....

funny enough i listened to "And Justice For All...." all the way through the other day and thought it was superb,i hadnt listened to that album for a hell of long time.

Got to be Master of Puppets, although And Justice For All comes close.

The production is ok on Justice, you dont want metal albums sounding too clean anyway!

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

My personal fave is "...Justice" but I do agree that their best record has to be "Puppets" - as said, not a duff track on it, and not a track on it you'd skip to get to another! Which is why I say it's actually a better album than "...Justice" even tho "...Justice" is my fave - there are a couple tracks on there I'd skip past sometimes....

The "Black" album IS a great album, some real classics on there (Sad But True, Through The Never, The Unforgiven, Of Wolf And Man) and some INCREDIBLY underatted songs (The Struggle Within is a SUPERB track!) and whilst I still like "Sandman", it's been played to death EVERYWHERE, so I tend to skip it nowadays....

Same can be said for the Load's - a big departure for Metallica, and there is a lot of stuff on there that isn't fantastic, tho each song IS good in it's own right, there is some totally KILLER stuff on there too!

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Yes i would defiantely agree about Load.
Genius album by Metallica and Hetfield's roots in Country & western are apparent and very well worked into the Metallica style.
Some Kind Of Monster was the best rockumentary i've ever seen and brought sympathy to the once hardnuts that is Metallica

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Tallica are also my life long fave band.... Tho I am not sure you can really compare live albums to studio albums!

Live Sh*t is fantastic, one the the best live box sets ever, and thats for all bands!

But I wouldn't compare it to a studio album like Lightning or Puppets.... S&M and Live Sh*t can be comparred of course....

S&M is also STUNNING......

Re: Your thoughts on best Metallica album ?

Studio
1. Master Of Puppets
2. Ride The Lightning
3. Kill 'Em all
4. And Justice For All
5. Garage Inc.
6. Black Album
7. Load
8. Re-load
9. St. Anger

Not sure if we're including live stuff, but live sh*t is obviously great, whereas S&M sucked on cd, but is ok on DVD, where you can select "band only" sound & cut out the awful orchestral bits (Ecstasy of Gold excepted.)

All started to go wrong for me when Cliff died really. None of the albums since (apart from Justice which he had a part in writing), have come close to matching the ones made when he was still around. All progressively worsening to the new low of St. Anger. & its' biscuit tin drum sound & no solos etc. etc. Interesting to note that they themselves appear to have disowned it too, playing no songs from it at all on recent tours.
