dvd-a on standard dvd player, is this correct

happy new year all, noticed in whathifi, article on dvda music dvds, that a dvda disk can be played on (normal dvd player, not dvda specific player) disk can be played in dd5.1, but player cannot play said dvda in the (higher dvda resolution format) fair enough , my dvd player is r2 only ,are dvdas region encoded?? so query is dvda in r2 dvd player output dd5.1, is this likly to give better sound quality over normal cd in 2 chan sterio, thanks all

Only if a DD track is encoded on the DVD along with the DVD-A information.....you will however find that all of the recent Warner Bros releases are encoded in this way...just take a look at the back of the DVD-A box before you buy.

As for sound quality...remember that DD is a severely data reduced format, even when compared to dTS....I have a couple of DVD-A's that I play at home in this way(not having a DVD-A capable player yet)and certainly find that whilst the sound is very pleasant and enveloping, there is a definite lack of dynamic range.

I have a couple of DVD-A discs I use on my Arcam (which does not yet have the DVD-A board).

They sounds amazing on the DD tracks.. especially the Missy Elliot album..tremendous!

I dont believe DVD-A is region specific (?)
B4 I got a DVD-A player I bought a few & thought they sounded excellent - DVD-A is another league of course -
play.com sell DVD-A for £12.99 - depending on your tastes I would recommend Fleetwood Mac - Rumours / Hotel California - Eagles / Metallica (Black Album) - Metallica / Brain Salad Surgery - ELP to name but three

Its a Pioneer 646a (I hope - at work at mo?)
Yeah I had a rancid vinyl of the ELP - Its amazing how good they sound on DVD-A - the bonus track of Lucky Man is a real audio treat (check out the bass!)
I have a few Foreigner DVD-A's too & Machine Head & A Night At The Opera which is another highly rated disc
Also I have 2 x Yes discs - Fragile & their new one the title of which I cant for the life of me remember (?)
Re the player - I have just told a mate to buy the £199 DVD-A player that Richer Sounds are doing - pretty cheap for DVD-A
If I had £350 I'd get a Pioneer DVD-A & SACD hybrid but I'm more than happy with my current machine (good for CDS too)
Good luck ... Paul

I think 656a is DVD-A/SACD and the 646a is DVD-A only. I have just bought a 656a and am waiting to take delivery.
