Re: The Stone Roses

First album was absolutely excellent with probably the best closing piece on any album ever (I Am the Resurrection) but the follow ups didn't do so much for me.

Re: The Stone Roses

There have been times when I've wished nuclear armageddon on Manchester, but fair do's they've produced a few decent bands. Love the first Stone Roses album, such a shame they couldn't sustain that level of brilliance.

He only used to do his solo stuff then about 2 years ago surprised everyone at an outdoor summer gig (venue escapes me but near Norfolk I think) with a load of roses tracks too. I think he now tours with a set list combining the two. I'd love to go see him at Brixton but the dates aren't too convenient for me - missed the last tour too

I Wanna Be Adored or Sugar Spun Sister are probably my favourite Roses tracks, his solo cover of Billie Jean is great too

Re: The Stone Roses

1st album - The Stone Roses
2nd album - Second Coming

Compilations were:

Complete Stones Roses
The very best of

There have also been several cash-in's by Silvertone (there old record company)

Turns into Stone
Garage Flowers
Remixes

They really aren't worth bothering with to be honest IMO as these are basically early pre-production material, production values on this material is pretty poor which is why the band never wanted the material releasing.

Seem to recall just a few years back in a poll of HMV customers the first album was named best album of all time!

Re: The Stone Roses

Put it this way, The Stone Roses saved British rock music. The 80's were utterly dire for music in this country. Apart from the few bands like The Smiths and Jesus and Mary Chain keeping a small glimmer of hope alive we were slowly drowning in a pile of Stock, Aitken and Waterman sewage. The music scene started to revive with the shoegazers in the late 80's but it was the Roses who done more than anyone to bring British rock music back to the masses and made it popular again. Without them we might not have had Oasis, Radiohead, Blur, Muse, the Manics, Coldplay, or just about anyone else.

Some might not like all of what has come since (I personally am sick and tired of Coldplay inspired moan rock like Keane and Travis) but the alternative is much worse. Can you imagine if the best act of the 90's was Robbie Williams?

On another note, I think Second Coming has stood up very well to age, possibly even better than the first album. I liked it when it first came out but I can understand why a lot of Roses fans didn't. It was a lot rockier and was a fairly big departure in sound. These days we're more used to the idea of a major act radically changing there sound from album to album (I'm looking at you Radiohead) but then it was unusual. I've been listening to it a lot lately and it really stands up as as great classic rock record.

Also, someone dissed the remix album earlier in the thread. I have to disagree, there are some fantastic mixes on there. You just need to remember its more of electronica album than a rock album.

Lesson over

Totally agree, along with The Happy Mondays, the Inspiral Carpets and to a lesser extent, Flowered Up, the last of which recorded Weekender, a classic of a record in its extended version.

Going back to the Roses, their first album is always in my changer in my car, it gets played more than any other cd in my collection.

Still listen the their debut all the time(I wanna be adored quite possibly the finest opener ever),the quality never fades.I would recommend Ian Brown's solo stuff, especially the Music of the Spheres and Solarized LP's.

Re: The Stone Roses

got to admit i still listen to the second coming a vastly underrated album.

probably spoiled by having such a long wait between the first and second, by the time it had come out it was all suede blur and elastica etc

the remixes album is a good album especially the 808 state remix of made of stone, some say its sacrilege to remix them, but forget that fools gold really catapulted them and that ripped off a funk/dance breakbeat.

flowered up "weekender" is a fantastic track clocking in at nearly 13 minutes got to admit though i was always a mondays fan.

cant wait to see them in november

Noticed today that Woolies have the first "Roses" album for a fiver and the second Coming for £3 in their current sale if anyone is missing either from their collection.

I bought another copy of the first album as my CD is literally worn out

I adore the first album - bought this in HMV in London 20 years ago, and I still have the CD

Wasn't so keen on Second Coming, but like it much more now.

Hated the first Ian Brown solo album, but I like that now too.

Don't see IB live, he's totally tone deaf!

True he can be a bit hit & miss (As he was at Glastonbury in 2002) But I saw the Roses in Sydney in 95 during their Second Coming tour and they were absolutely brilliant!

Their 1st album still ranks as one of the best debuts of all time and they influenced so many British bands during the 90's.

Great band.

Great band.
I saw him at Glasto in 2002, maybe thats why, I was totally out of it on pear cider, and I can still remember the fog-horn vocals

Very small tent, and he threatened to stop the gig and some people were climbing up the supporting poles to get a better view! Worse vocals ever I think
