I love my taste in music....

I was just chillin' - sooooooo chilled - listening to Hendrix's "Hey Joe", then as it finishes, Slayer's "Angel Of Death" comes on - and it's all good!

How about you guys - do you have fairly wide n diverse ranges of music you enjoy, and can you intertwine them and enjoy loads of different styles at the same time and not group together?

I am mainly a rock and metal head, but I do like nearly allsorts - so my playlists have everything from chilled/euphoric dancey stuff to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, then to Vanessa Carlton, to Leftfield, to classical, to Christina Aguilera, to Morbid Angel and Deicide, to Jamiroquai, to movie scores by John Williams and Hans Zimmer, to Led Zeppelin + ACDC....

I love variety me

Re: I love my taste in music....

I'm pretty similar. You can't call yourself a music fan if you have narrow tastes. Variety is essential. I've just bought the complete Mamas and Papas with 'Heartwork' by Carcass.

Re: I love my taste in music....

Now you see, I dont think I am a music fan, I have a very narrow taste in music.
Oh theres plenty of stuff I dont mind listing too, but only a small amount of stuff I would actually buy.

A lot of music i listen too is when I am working.
This can range from TV and film sound tracks to 80s pop and early 90s dance.

I also like a lot of stuff that is not considered "great music" or IN , wow now that makes me sound weird eh?

some of my favorite artists and groups are

Chicacgo
Robert Plamer
Genesis.
Phil collins.
Micheal bolton.
Stan Bush
Celine Dion
Paul Hardcastle
David Arnold
James horner
Peter Cetera
Go west
Vangelis
Jean Michell Jarr

Re: I love my taste in music....

Now you see, that's just a list of popular artists who've sold millions of records; how could anyone possibly be a music fan with such taste?!

Dave, my tongue is well inside my cheek here - although most of the artists in your list don't do anythign for me personally I totally love Genesis and the man Collins unequivocably so no, I'm not hip either!

I like a lot of stuff and to me it's all music - I hate all this labelling with a passion.

Some of my favourite artists (apart from those mentioned above) include Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, John McLaughlin, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa, Van der Graaf Generator and Randy Newman. Not as diverse as some (you'll notice there's no new acts listed) but I do think I'm pretty open to what's out there.

Re: I love my taste in music....

I know these will seem very 'now' to be classed as me having a wide music taste, but working these night shifts I've put my phone onto random play throughout the 9 hours I have to work, and it's quite nice to hear such a random mix of stuff --

some examples from my playlist

Beck
Lauren Hill
The Beatles
ILS
Faith No More
Basement Jaxx
Katie Melua
Queens of the Stone Age - (favourite band of all time)
Moby
Pixies
Willy Mason
The Prodigy
Eagle Eye Cherry
Massive Attack
Flaming Lips
Nine Inch Nails
Non Phixion
Arctic Monkeys

certainly keeps me on my toes

Well, I sort of just picked up on one of his tracks on the radio one day and so did some further investigation and purchasing. I don't like every single one of his tracks or albums (not really in to a lot of his covers or the opera type stuff he has done, but the following tracks I really enjoy and feel he is very underrated just because a lot of his stuff is ballades and "soft rock"

Stand out tracks from him for me are.

How am I supposed to live with out you?

Looking at your list I think we can all agree with you on that one

Personally I always thought I had pretty eclectic tastes, but since using last.fm I realise that I actually listen to a lot of the same sort of stuff. Mostly rock and indie. Actually tracking your listening is very revealing, just becuase you listen to odd bit of Miles Davis doesn't really make your taste eclectic if its wedged in between a hundred Iron Maiden tracks.

BTW, my last.fm page is here http://www.last.fm/user/pmc100/

Re: I love my taste in music....

I love my mp3 player set to random. It uncovers quality songs I'd forgotten about, all genres (mainly rock and alternative). But in the same breath, the odd tune comes on so bad that I wonder what an earth was I thinking when I bought that album!

As far as eclectic musical tastes go, mine has been described as "more like epileptic". Absolutely allsorts on my PC and for physical proof you only have to scan my CD collection. Examples of genres from right across the musical spectrum - but all of it stuff I do truly enjoy listening to (well, I'm not in the habit of buying stuff I don't like).

But (to me at least) that's what music is all about. You hear new stuff, or someone recommends it and you like it, so you search out more stuff by that artists or similar artists and your tastes consequently broaden. For example, many of my musical quirks have been inspired by ex-partners - if you're living with someone you do tend to absorb some of their favourites like a musical sponge.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've just had a money-spinning idea on how to make bath-times more fun - musical sponges. Anyone got a number for "Dragons Den"?
