Last.fm anyone?

Saw this mentioned on the BBC's click programme the other day and I have to say it has simply blown me away on a number of fronts. It is quite simple the Dogs ******'s [new validation? I'm sure I typed Boll_ox' s !] for music.

Simply type in a band or artist name and the station plays a track. Hmm...nice then it jumps to similar bands / artists /genre and it plays another track and another. Don't like the track click skip. I am discovering so much new music from bands/artists I may know the name but have never listened too, interspersed with some of my favorite bands. My head is just about to explode.

Tried typing in PJ Harvey got my track - it moved onto Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Muse, The Dressden Dols(?), Plasebo, The strokes ("Is this it" - what a track), Interpol -PDA(?), now the Smiths (half a person).

You don't need to register to do the above, but if you do the software builds up a picture of what you listen too (called "scrobbling" apparently?)and can make further recommendation and get better at playing what you like. It's like the perfect radio station - no adverts, no Phone in Comps, no inane DJ Chat. Try it.
Regards
BoaT

Re: Last.fm anyone?

It is very good although I prefer Pandora, just stick in any old US postcode and you can use it.

Re: Last.fm anyone?

Yeah, see this earlier thread.

There's even an AVForums group complete with weekly charts as well (Joanna Newsom at #1 ??) ; only 13 members so far but the more the merrier if you wish to join.

My page is here if you want an idea of how it builds over time.

Re: Last.fm anyone?

Been using it for nearly two years now - really good especially for how it helps you discover new artists and people you'd never got into - my music collection has more or less doubled since I got into it.

Re: Last.fm anyone?

Sounds great. I tried using Pandora a while back, but couldn't get along with the interface. I've heard lot's about Last.fm so I will give it a go!

Re: Last.fm anyone?

I use last fm all the time - I think it used to called Audioscrobbler a while back didn't it ??

It is THE best site for finding the names of tracks by certain groups or artists .

If I hear a good song on the radio or TV - I just type the name of the group in LAst fm to find out their best tracks in order of popularity.

Then buy or download accordingly .

How does the plug in work ??
I downloaded a special program for LAST FM but I have NO IDEA how to use it ??

Re: Last.fm anyone?

It should have detected if you have Windows Media Player and/or Itunes installed and installed it's plugin to them. Then just play music with either of these players and it will record what you listen to and build up a profile of your listenening habits. It also records what you listen to on an Ipod if you sync it with Itunes.

Re: Last.fm anyone?

Hmmmmmm I tried a couple of tracks from Spoon ....not my cup of tea to be honest....

listened to I turn my camera AND The Way we get by ... not really taken by either ...and they were the TOP TWO tracks voted for by Last Fm fans .

I would suggest Incubus ( obviously ) The Strokes , Arctic Monkeys , Athlete, Coldplay .......... and MY NEWEST interest The Twang ....check out TWO LOVERS by them .....I guarantee you will like it !!
