advice required on selling dance 12"s

i have a load of dance 12"s that i collected in the early-mid 90s, which i haven't really played in 10 years. i could do with getting some more cash, so i was considering selling some of them as i thought i might be able to get a few quid with some of them. most of them are house/garage, i have a load of old junior boys own 12"s such as underworld, chemical/dust bros etc from when they first started, which i thought i might get a few quid for as they were quite collectable at the time. i also have some old original classic acid house 12"s and some disco 12"s from salsoul, west end, as well as some strictly rhythmn etc. i wouldn't bother trying with stuff from less desirable labels, unless it was classic tracks. i also have a few promos, such as perfecto records stuff like "not over" by grace (as covered by the klaxons)

i'm hoping on capitalising on the rarity of the items to make a few quid, rather than sell in a bulk load. i don't have an ebay account, and can't be bothered too much with that, but i'm going to london several times in august and september, and i thought maybe there is a dance store that buys and sells second hand stuff to dj's and collectors, as i thought i'd probably get a better price down there than up in edinburgh

does anyone know any good stores where i'd get a decent price for this kind of stuff? most of the stuff is in good condition, nothing scratched. it's all been played in clubs, so it's not mint

i know a few years back in london i saw some of the 12"s i had selling for £25-50+, as we are talking records from about 15-20 years old, i dunno if the price would have went up as it's rarer, or down because of mp3s and reissues/compilations/cds

if anyone knows any good stores or can point me in the right direction i'd appreciate it. i'm not so keen on mailing a pile of stuff to an ad in mixmag

I'm in exactly the same position and have tried most of the routes that you have suggested.

I tried ebay first off, in bulk with case included but couldn't get past £40 Might be the records but there are loads of classics but no takers.

Moved onto individual records but this takes lots of organising and watching and became a pain. I sold a few but it does take a lot of time.

Spoke and drove to Hard to Find records in Birmingham, who are one of the biggest dance record shops in the country, but they weren't interested either.

You have my sympathies and if you find a shop that will take them off your hands let me know.

ok cheers. i thought some people would have been dying to get some of that stuff, but the re-issues and mp3s must have killed the market. i suppose i can pop into a store in london and try and suss things out. i'd rather keep them, but i don't have decks at home so they are just stored away not being used

Have you tried doing a car boot ,when i used to run my internet shop ,we took some stock down to our local car boot and made a fortune ,if you,ve got some good records ,there'll be plenty of takers ,we shifted around 750 in a morning ,there's loads of record collectors,dj types wandering around car boot sales.

i don't have a car, and getting someone to take me to b&q for a couple or paving stones to put under my speakers has taken me a year of asking to no avail, so it would probably be easier to build a pyramid than get them to do a car boot sale. i have considerd doing record fairs before, but i don't think i could be botherd doing it, and i don't want to just sell stuff for £2 a pop, i'd only really want to sell this stuff if i was getting decent money for the rarity value, instead of £100 for a box of 50 classics

Re: advice required on selling dance 12"s

A friend listed his and sent it to a few record places, Hard to find records and the like, they offered him really bad prices, and couldn't find anywhere that gave any real half decent price. He kept them. If this is a big part of your old life then I would keep them for prosperity.

Sorry I'm no help.

You could try http://www.discogs.com/ I've bought a few rare old house tracks from there, thre's a selling system similar to amazon marketplace, it might be a problem with you having no feedback though.
It's good for finding out if your records are worth something to someone though.

Re: advice required on selling dance 12"s

I have a large collection of old skool dance music and has you say nobody wants it has most clubs and djs are using mp3 or cds complete disgrace. I tried to sell a mint copy of the - prodigy What evil lurks - the other week on Ebay and never even had a bid for the 99p starting price, a couple of years ago these were changing hands for upto £40 a copy.

My advice is just to old on to them and enjoy them later on in life sometime

Looks like we're all in the same position, nobody appreciates the classics anymore.
