DVD-A???? Am I being Thick?!?!?!?!

Guys,

Can you tell me does DVD-A play in any DVD player??

Reason I ask (except for the fact I don't know the answer!) is
I would like to listen to music decoded in 5.1.

Has anyone got any recommendations, DVD-A or otherwise, as to what is worth purchasing?? I've no particular musical taste, although Jazz and Blues recommendations would be a right result!!!!

Erm, to play DVDA discs you'll need to have a DVDA compatible player, the same goes for SACD as well (but that'll be SACD compatible!)

Let us know what your DVD player is and i'm sure we can let you know if it's compatible.

My player does not specify it is DVD-A compliant. So I guess its not!!!

As this is the case, are their any recommended DVD's (concerts etc) that have great 5.1 sound????

i've picked up The Eagles 'hell freezes over' which is superb, it's a DTS soundtrack which i bought from www.ezydvd.com

Worked out cheaper than my usual play.com about 8 squid i think.

I also picked up Diana Krall Paris concert which again is great, but not as good as the eagles IMHO.

I seem to remember there being other threads on this theme do a search, i'm sure you'll come up with something.

In my experience, you don't have to have a DVD-A player for all the DVD-A disks out there - but it helps.

Obviously to get all the benefits (extra high quality, and multichannel) of DVD-A you need a DVD-A player, but a lot of the DVD-A disks have a Dolby Digital 5.1 version on one of the layers some were that will play in a DVD player

Bjork's Vespertine is dual sided. On one side are two DVD-A versions (2 or 5.1 channel?), flip the disk over and you find stereo PCM and DD5.1 versions.

err! I have ONE disk, but I hope most DVD-A are like Bjork's

all dvd-audio discs have dolby digital soundtracks as well, some also have dts. so if you're happy with the sound quality of your average concert dvd, they'll sound great, and if you ever upgrade to a dvd-a capable player, you have the added bonus of the higher resolution version. and it doesn't all have to be 5.1, the stereo version of the eagles' hotel california, at 192khz, sounds unbelievable!
