Recommend me some Electronica...

In a desperate attempt to find that 'something new' I'm always looking for but never can find, I thought I'd ask the brethren for some tips.

I'm after something refreshing, but not too avant-garde or minimalistic. I've tried a lot recently, but not found quite what I want! My roots are with the likes of Depeche Mode, Hybrid, Faithless, DJ Shadow (although bar one track the last album was atrocious), and generally have liked works or remixes by Lamb, Shortwave Set, Massive Attack, Underworld, Kruder & Dorfmeister, to name but a few. I'm sure I'm missing a load out as well.

Recent failures have been LCD Soundsystem, Wagon Christ, 7 Hurtz...just not my thing.

Answers on a postcard please...

Hey Inj, I have similar taste to yours. Howabout;

OK Cowboy by Vitalic (it will knock your socks off......just don't listen to it in the car )

76.14 by Global Communication (stunning music)

An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death by Eluvium (beautiful piano music)

The Dead Texan by The Dead Texan

UFOrb by The Orb (classic ambient-techno)

Nahoo Too by Paul Mounsey

Behind the Sun by Chicane (just buy it.......excellent music)

As Heard on radio Soulwax pt.2. by Too Many DJ's (stunning compilation)

The Drum and Bass Collection by The Art of Noise (watch out for tha bass)

Music for 3 Pianos by Harold Budd

To name but a few ! I could mention some great classical music too if you need a change of direction .

Y'Know, I think I bought LCD Soundsystem thinking it was Global Communication, in a weird way. Fopp had it cheap and I took a punt. Got that one all wrong.

I have lots of The Orb (and Orbital) and UFOrb is a classic. A lot of those artists are new to me though, so I will definitely check those out. As it happens, I did buy the Remix Project of Requiem for a Dream, if you are aware of that. Now that's very good!

Speaking of classical, well, more orchestral really, but Rob Dougan's Furious Angels was a very good listen too. I do love a bit of bass (though not strictly D&B) so that mix of strings and beats I do love, I must say. Keep 'em coming (or PM me.) Much appreciated.

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

You mentioned you like Underworld remixes, check out their original material. Dubnobasswithmyheadman is probably a good place to start.

How about Air? A bit more commercial but some good stuff.

For something a bit dancier, check out Rabbit In The Moon. They have two superb remix albums and an album of original material. One of my favourite bands of any genre

Excellent album....

LCD was a bit hit and miss for me as well. I have aload of the back to mine collection.

Fav's for me Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions and anything from AIM. I belive they played in Manchester recently with a massive orchestral.

Funnily enough, I do have a fair bit of Underworld 'somewhere', but a lot of it seemed to pass me by until I bought their recent 'best of' type collection. I seem to prefer the non-vocal tracks, apart from Born Slippy.

AIM I've not heard of...will have to check them out. Air I have a couple of CD's of, the Virgin Suicides I thought was great.

also FSOL-Lifeforms if you haven't already got it.

Leftfield (bit obvious I know)

You could go for this but being into dnb I don't consider it the strongest material. Stuff released on Good Looking records is generally best for home listening. Must mention Omni Trio aswell - has released about 4 or 5 quality dnb albums.

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

My most recent electronic purchase has been the "Ted E.P." by Clark. Very good stuff, and only £3.99 on Bleep.com

edit: I see nobody has mentioned aphex twin, boards of canada, or the black dog. Try these absolute classics:

Aphex Twin - I care because you do
The Black Dog - Spanners
Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

It's nice to see this thread take off a little, a lot of the names coming back are very familiar, even if I didn't mention them in the initial thread; I guess I couldn't possibly remember everything and every group.

Thanks to the last poster I've given Liveplasma a try and that seems to be a very useful tool. Aside from Electronica, I've always been interested in a certain genre that I find hard to describe...it's not really in vogue now but back in the day there were remixes that used a definite 'cut'n'paste' method of editing vocals and beats. I'm not really sure what it's called to be honest but names like Omar Santana, The Latin Rascals and Shep Pettibone would be in the frame. Proper DJ stuff, I would say. However, this kind of thing is hard to find (so it seems.) So hopefully things like Liveplasma will help. A great find!

If you like Cut 'n' Paste DJ stuff then surely you should listen to Coldcut and Ninja Tune.

They have a 3 disk compilation called "Xen Cuts" which should give you a taste.

If you like what you hear on the link below, there's a whole world of sensational "Electronica" that bubbles under the surface and not many people tap into...

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

Some good shouts already some to add I have not seen :

Kraftwerk : Tour De France Soundtracks
Kraftwerk : Minimum Maximum
Sasha : Involver
Sasha & John Digweed : Northern Exposure 1
Zero 7 : All 3 albums
Telepopmusik : Genetic World
William Orbit : Strange Cargo 4
Sabres of Paradise : Sabresonic I & II
Thievery Corporation : Tales from the TC hifi - then buy rest of the albums

gos theres loads more but these are my standard electronic faves in addition to everything that Orbital & Orb have put out.

Have you ever considered Dub ? if not get into Trojan Records 3 box sets, ie Roots is a good start.

Get your Kraftwerk out, then listen to all their remixes - marvellous stuff.

Kruder & Dorfmeister remix of "Useless" Depeche Mode is superb.

I assume you've listened to the Client albums?

Speaking of Ladytron, I've heard a few of their remixes - but has anyone got any opinions on any of their own stuff? Some folk on Amazon seem to rate it quite well.

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

Deffo some Goldfrapp especially the Black Cherry album.

Also highly reccommend everything by a group called Banco de Gaia

Alternatively, buy yourself a surround system & get the Depeche Mode remasters & listen in DTS (By the way, Black Celebration remaster out on Monday )

Re: Recommend me some Electronica...

Plenty of stuff on the Warp Records label might be of interest - Boards of Canada, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Nightmares on Wax, Squarepusher.

Also my current favourite electronica is The Knife, whose album "Silent Shout" was one of the highlights of 2006.

An excellent choice for slightly dark, poptastic - sexy electronica would be

The rather marvellous

Robots in Disguise - they're very hip too as one of them is seeing Noel Fielding of Mighty Boosh fame

Turn It Up is bloody awesome....

The new LCD Soundsystem album is surprisingly good.

Any mixes you can find online by Loco Dice.

Also the DC10 Circo Loco Ibiza albums are very good.

For fans of Live DJ sets http://www.themixingbowl.org/signup.php

Looks full at the moment - but bookmark it nd keep trying - well worth it.
