Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

The most awfull and upsetting anyone could ask

You top FIVE songs!

So hard to choose just 5 as, IMO, they did SOOOOO many superb songs!

But here goes - NOT IN ANY ORDER!

1) Estranged (Illusion 2)
2) Coma (Illusion 1)
3) Civil War (Illusion 2)
4) Nightrain (Appetite)
5) November Rain (Illusion 1)

"Double Talking Jive" was a strong contender, but "November Rain" just pipped it to the post - mainly cos of the guitar solo really.....

Such a fantastic band, and the band that got me into the whole Rock N Roll thing waaaaaaaaay back when I was a youngster! I think actually that Illusion 2 was the first album by them I picked up, and it might well have been because "You could be Mine" is on it, which I remembered from Terminator 2....

Eitherway, been listening ever since, and they were, IMO, one of the greatest rock bands of the 20th century - extremely volitile, and incredible self destructive, but immensly SUPERB.... Slash is simply a GOD on the guitar, and Matt Sorum is still one of my favourite drummers today (the combination of his GnR work and Lars Ulrich (Metallica) drumming is what made me pick up sticks and learn to play the drums) Then of course there is Axl. What can you say about him? Madman, lunatic, crazy ass mofo, idiot? Whatever you call him, he is still genious....

I'll sort out a list soon (Appetite was the first CD I ever bought); but surely the question is...

Will Chinese Democracy ever be released?

Re: Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

I reckon Democracy will be released possibly this year. Of course, it cannot live up to it's hype but I'm still hoping for something good from it.

My 5 favourites in no order:

Nightrain
Rocket Queen
Welcome to the Jungle
One in a Million
Civil War

Unfortunately Jungle is one of those cases where overplaying has diminished it's appeal...however, like other "classics" such as Zep's Stairway to Heaven, that doesn't diminish it's genius.

I was recently asked what one album I would recommend which sums up what I like about the music I enjoy. Although it is not my favourite album, I recommended Appetite for Destruction as a good example.

Re: Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

sweet child o mine
welcome to the jungle
patience
i used to love her
one in a million

i loved appetite and lies, didn't think much of use your illusion at all, i thought november rain was way overproduced, particularly after having the piano and accoustic versions for years before the album came out, i also thought they had fallen asleep onstage and phoned it home when they played it live last year (and *** was somewhere over the rainbow played, i thought it was guns n roses, not gays n roses). i also liked the spaghetti incident as it was more back to basics. what i've heard of chinese democracy doesn't make me hope they hurry to realese it, put it that way. i wouldn't be surprised if the original lineup reformed and they completely rerecorded that album before releasing it at the end of the year

Recording on the album has finished, and they're now mixing it. CLICK
As for top 5 songs, I would probably say -

1) Civil War
2) 14 Years
3) Yesterdays
4) You Could Be Mine
5) Rocket Queen

Re: Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

It's So Easy
Out Ta Get Me
Welcome To The Jungle
Paradise City
Sweet Child Of Mine

All from Appetite. I much prefer the early stuff.

I recently 'aquired' a DVD of a live performance, 'Live At The Roxy '88'. I had it on tape years ago and thought it was a bootleg (I think I bought it at Camden Market). Along with Appetite I used to listen to it virtually every day for about two years. It turns out it was a concert recorded for MTV, just about the time they were starting to get noticed but before they became really big. The performance is nothing short of sensational. It's got pretty much the entire of Appetite plus a couple of covers. I can't believe how good they were live, and being in some basement club in New York was the perfect setting. The later stadium footage doesn't even come close to capturing their energy.

Watching them its completely obvious that they are all completely off their faces Duff can barely stand up and Steve Adler can barely sit still Slash's guitar playing is phenononal and Axl is just Axl, completely nuts.

It was amazing to watch after listening to it so many times. The thing was I hadn't heard it in 15 years yet every note seemed familiar. Seeing it instead of just hearing it was a pretty strange experience. There are some great moment that I remember fomr the tape but can now see what it going on. There is one part were Axl is right down the front and some chick grabs him and tries to snog him. He is pulled out and start laughing and joking. I remember him laughing but never knew why. Another great moment is when Slash goes right down to the crowd and it showing off on a solo when some guy reaches up and start retuning his guitar, his reaction is priceless

I just had a look on Amazon and can't see it. So you'll have to find it from other sources but it is well worth the effort.

EDIT: It's called Live At The Ritz, not the Roxy. Still can't find it on Amazon though.

If its anything like their recent live set, its been delayed due to the length of the guitar solo's

Re: Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

Play.com have Chinese Democracy available for pre-order, due for release 2nd April. Amazon are also stating the same release date.

Doesn't mean it will happen of course.

i remember that show from years ago when it was first on. i thought it was from 87. i managed to get it on dvd myself. thats the gnr i like, rather than the stadium rock version. when i saw em at the glasgow SECC they were better than i thought they would be, but still not as good as the original lineup in a smaller venue like the barra's

I wouldn't hold your breath! Aparently they've started mixing the album, so it'll be at least a couple of months before anything is released.
Unless Axl scraps the whole album and forms a jazz band instead.

Re: Guns N Roses fans.... THE question....

Can't believe that Sweet Child O' Mine is missing from so many Top 5's. Well each to their own.

As for Chinese Democracy, I was given a few tracks by a friend about 6 months ago of a bootleg called 'Whenever Its Done'. Is this the album that is due for release? It does contain a song called Chinese Democracy so I assume so. 10 tracks in total.

Probably because it has just been done to death.... Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it's played to death! On radio or TV, if they are gonna play Guns N Roses, it's nearly always Sweet Child, very occasionally Paradise City, and once in a blue moon it's Live And Let Die - but 99.9% of the time it's Sweet Child - and it just gets, well, boring really.....

Some of those were demo's, and some were live tracks. There's no telling if those are going to end up on the album, as Axl's said he's recorded 3 albums worth of material. I'm not sure whether this means he's planning on releasing 3 albums or just selecting the best songs from 3 albums worth.

Play now have a release date of 17th September. I think maybe they were just having some fun in the office - "you pick a number and I'll pick a month"...who knows .
