Favourite cover versions...

Personally, I am a huge fan of hearing how bands honour other bands/musicians work by doing cover versions - of course there are times when it all goes horribly wrong (think Avril Lavigne covering a Metallica track for their MTV ICON performance)!!!!

Some of my faves tho have to be;

Skid Row - Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix) - superb job here, beautifully done!
Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy (Queen) and So What (Anti Nowhere League)
Guns N Rose - Live And Let Die (Paul McCartney)
Pantera - Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath)
Dream Theater - Dark Side of the Moon - whole album! (Pink Floyd)

Metallica actually did a cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" during the Seattle 89 concert (from the Live Sh*t Binge & Purge box set) included in Kirks guitar solo. It was done with no vocals, but it was really very good - you can see and hear a LOT of Hendrix in Hammet's playing, and his interpretation of it was superb Likewise, they also did a take on Deep Purples "Misunderstood" from the San Diego concert (same video box set) which was also very good, albeit shortened.....

Re: Favourite cover versions...

I'm with you on Metallica's version of 'So What', love that track. Their versions of 'Whisky in a Jar' and 'Tuesdays Gone' are cracking as well.

A band I actually discovered via these forums is the Easy-Star All Stars. They do reggae covers of entire albums. So far they have done Dark Side Of The Moon (Dub Side of the Moon) and OK Computer (Radiodread). Both are excellent.

Jeff Buckleys cover of Leanord Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is a classic.

Re: Favourite cover versions...

Easily the best cover song EVER is Metallica's Whisky in the Jar.

One of my best songs period & the video is quite good too

Also liked...

Ugly Kid Joe's cover of "Cats in the Cradle"
Stereophonics cover of "Handbags & Gladrags"
Korns cover of "One"
Kelly Clarkson's cover of "A Moment like This"

Think that's about it, most other covers suck

Neil

I just love "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix
and also like "Cats in the Cradle" by Ugly Kid Joe

but my favourite is probably "I'm Easy" by Faith no more.

Re: Favourite cover versions...

I'm sure there was a thread about this a while back. Still it's always a good topic of discussion.

The first few that spring to mind for me are...

William Shatner - Common People
Nick Cave - Disco 2000
Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat
Radiohead - Nobody Does It Better
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall
Jesus & Mary Chain - Surfin' USA
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Kristin Hersh - When The Levee Breaks
Siouxsie & Banshees - Dear Prudence
Blue Aeroplanes - The Boy In The Bubble
The Flaming Lips - War Pigs
Debbie & Iggy - Well, Did You Evah!

and credit must go to Coldplay for covering the entire Simple Minds back catalogue but tying to trick us by changing the names of the songs

The greatest cover version of all time is Roy Orbison's version of Cyndi Lauper's I Drove All Night...an absolute belter.

The absolute worst cover ever is Robert Palmer's Johnny and Mary as performed by that useless excuse for a band known as Placebo...

I think this has been mentioned before but "Hurt" by Johnny Cash.
One of my favourite covers of all time, and Cash really made this song his own. It is totally superior to the Nine Inch Nails version.

Re: Favourite cover versions...

I have to agree with pmc and tjradiohead.

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is one of the most powerful songs ever written and Jeff Buckley's rendition takes it to an even higher level than the original. That incredible voice and the harsh guitar, pure genius! It also includes the extra verse that was deemed too controversial for the original recording. This must be fairly unique.

I urge anyone who has not heard this masterpiece to seek it out, but be warned, the lyrics are not for religious fanatics or readers of The Sun!

Can't believe I didn't know there was a Music forum on here

Off the top of my head.

Never Let me Down Again - Smashing Pumpkins (if you've never heard it, listen to Depeche Mode's original first - both are just superb!)

I'm also a big fan of Inspiral Carpets cover of Tainted Love - great organ in it!

I'll think of some more...
