Thanks: Gave 44, Got 139 | Who was the first to mention The Arcade Fire on the uk internet ?
I was looking at the new Arcade fire album and was wondering if I had contributed in any way to the popularity in the UK (sort of viral marketing). At the point I came across them they had not even released the album in the Canada and I posted on this forum on 21-09-2004 and reviewed it on the AV talk site in October.
In an idle moment of contemplation I thought about this. Any thoughts ?

I wouldn't shut up about them after I saw them live in Montreal (summer 04) - posting on various forums and getting my friends into them who imported the album at the earliest opportunity. They're one of my favourite 'current' bands, I find myself enjoying their album more with every listen - something that doesn't often happen with me.

What made you go and see them ?

They were supporting a band my cousin (who lived in Montreal for a while) wanted to see, I just tagged along so it was pure chance really |

Did you anticipate they would grow in popularity ?
I think I first heard of them through Pitchfork, they had reviewed a pre-release copy of Funeral and I managed to listen to a couple of tracks elsewhere on the interweb and immediately ordered it on pre-release from Canada.
After listening to the album a couple of times I was hooked and wrote a review on AV Talk, reading back over the review was interesting. I used the words 'cant help feeling that this will soon have classic attached to it'. Nice when you get it right |

aparantly david bowie used to rave about them on his site, and a member there told me about them. i got to see them support franz ferdinand during the edinburgh festival in august 2005, and i thought they were better than FF. the first time i saw FF the year before at T in the park they did a great short set of stuff from the first album, but dragging it out for 2 albums and a full show all the songs ended up sounding the same and a bit tedious apart from the hits

Bowie posted this on his message boards on Nov 23rd 2004;
"THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO SAY.
'THE ARCADE FIRE' HAVE THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Quite the most beautiful, moving and passionate piece of brilliant song-writing and quirky performance I've heard in YONKS !!!
It's called 'FUNERAL' (Merge Records) and nothing else (and yes, I've heard the new U2) comes close.
(Well, maybe 'Secret Machines' and their CD 'Now Here Is Nowhere)
OK, OK, . .. I'm doing my diary about them both and some others, a sort of year end round up."
Cheers

Sorry to take the thread off topic | I like it. It is different to Funeral but keeps many of the same themes. Vocal have beefed up from all parties as well. The 2 disc vinyl is a good 'un as well.
I completely missed the buzz around for Funeral- my brother bought it for me for Chrimbo '05 out of the blue and I was hooked thereafter. Can't not have it in my car these days.
