i have some good contacts, but a lot of it is timing, luck and will and ability to drop things at a moments notice to travel 100s or 1000s of miles to attend an invite only or very limited entry event
prince opened his studio complex (4 recording studios, 1 video studio, a cut down "arena" area, and a smaller club area, plus offices etc etc) 3 years in a row to a limited number of fans, each year was differrent. the first couple he did big shows elsewhere in town, but had guests play in his studio, many up and coming names or even well known ones, but the third he played 7 nites in a row playing a completly different set and style each nite (rock nite, accoustic guitar, piano nite, funk jam party, normal show etc) with guests opening for him. he would also jump onstage and jam with the guests, it was very laid back. one nite on his birthday macy gray did a live show in the small club area, other times were eryka badu, common, the time, nikka costa, maceo parker, and even george clinton turned up (he was wasted). another year he did 3 main shows in mpls and had afterparties at his studio, where he jammed literally till dawn. right now he has his club and resturant in vegas, after the main show he invites people to the resturaunt next door and jams till past 5am
i've been lucky to get on tv shows like tfi friday and the tube, and meet people like paul macartney, robbie williams, chaka khan, george benson, etc, by knowing the right people. i was watching tfi on friday and the next i was on the live show, and the following day at another tv show meeting a beatle and robbie williams. getting friendly with staff, techs, security also helps, and as i result i've been in the studio with prince in a 2 hour conversation, and even helped him organise an afterparty for fans in london, where he and his dj and crew attended. i also was asked to setup shows for one of his ex band members (who sang with him in vegas last week) but settled for djing for him in london, where he had a few ex james brown band members play and jam with him (they now play with maceo parker, who is part of princes live band), that was pretty cool. the bass player was on the record of one nation under a groove, one of the worlds funkiest basslines
btw, from what i've heard, prince's new album is going to be a rock/guitar album. he's covered a mashup/medley of all along the watchtower mixed with because of you, the foo fighters (ironically he complained about them covering a few of his songs as b sides and live) song, which is pretty damn good. he's playing the superbowl on sunday so hopefully he'll turn the guitars up to 11
