ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

Hi all
I'm going to add some 5.1 music videos to my rental list on Lovefilm and would like to here some recommendations.
I've only ever heard one - Herbie Hancock Future 2 Future and it was pretty good sound wise, so it's piqued my interest.

Thanks
tt

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

I must have 80 or so music dvds -mainly modern jazz stuff but some rock and progressive.

It might help if you gave some idea of what music you like - there have been many threads here recommending music dvds but at the end of the day, if you don't like the music you will only watch it once regardless of how good the visuals or sound are!

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

My tastes are pretty broad.
Mostly music of black origin (jazz, soul, hip hop [not chart rap], R&B, turntablism), but also alt country (Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, Ray LaMontagne, Sufjan Stevens, etc).
Plus lots of other stuff like Radiohead, massive attack.
Not really bothered about flavour of the month rocknroll bands (that's my least favourite parts of the Jools Holland show.)

moby - hotel.
all the jools holland programs.
all paul wellers are good....if you like the music of course....
the who at the albert hall.

personally the big gigs normally do my head in as the camera really stays focused on one thing longer than a nano second plus the lets zoom in on some t*** on someother T**** shoulders school of filming tends to grate after a while

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

Well, I'll recommend three that don't normally get a say:

Billy Cobham - Culture Mix

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Billy-Cobham...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

World's greatest drummer of the past thirty five years a bit after his best, but with a great funky band and all loving it. I mean - 20-30 years old and playing with Billy Cobham... It can't get better than this for these guys.

Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Porcupine-Tr...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

A bit proggy, but a trendy video with great audio and great songs. The Yes for people too sad to admit they like Yes.

Robben Ford - The Paris Concert.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Robben-Ford-...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

The greatest blues jazz rock guitarist/singer in the world, but no one except me seems to realise it! Phenomenal performance - but you have to like blues/rock guitar...
This is my favourite music dvd of all that I own - the guy is like a cross between Miles Davis, Clapton, Larry Carlton and Stevie Ray, but with a style of his own. Love his guitar playing more than I can say.

However... only the Porcupine Tree one is widescreen... But just get em all !!!

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

Wow guys - thanks for all the suggestions.
Like I say I'm only adding them to my lovefilm rental list so I can take a punt at quite a few of these with no risk.

Hi Phil - I'm a big Billy Cobham fan (only his best stuff though I guess), and I have seen him live a couple of times - he never disappoints. I'll definitely add this to my list.

You've hit the nail on the head of why I've never really been a fan of these until now. + I think there's something about these large gigs which means the bands don't play as well as smaller more intimate gigs. That's one of the reason I like Jazz/blues/soul gigs so much - there's a real communication going on between the band and audience. Although I have to say Public Enemy in Manchester was one of my favourite gigs.

I'm off now to listen to some music samples of all of these to see which suit.

Thanks again
Any more suggestions?

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

If you like Billy Cobham maybe you like Pat Metheny??

If so, this is a bargain:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pat-Metheny-...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

The Speaking of Now concert is possibly the best sound I have heard in a live dvd, and also a great performance. The other one in the set is also very good, but the video direction is not so hot.

Cheers
Phil

I like my Jazz on the edge of funk or really really rhythmic like Michel Petrucciani - I've got a couple of Metheny albums but to be honest they don't get played. I've got some great Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander too - they're more my thing - you get the idea. I don't mind Brad Meldau either although there's no DVD's of his on Lovefilm.

The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over. Lovely live concert DVD. Fantastic version of Hotel California on here too.

This is excellent:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Michel-Petru...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

And there is an excellent Jean Luc Ponty DVD - it's called something original - Jean Luc Ponty in Concert.
With a great funky band of French and African musicians.
Can't find it on Amazon.
Here is the link to it on his website:

http://www.ponty.com/

I played this last night and it is really amazing. I defy anyone with your tastes not to like this one lol. Interesting that there is no guitarist, and the band is all the better for it. Also has a wonderful percussion player who I had not heard of before I saw it.

Don't dismiss the Metheny one - he plays like a man possessed on the Speaking of Now concert - not just with the band but also in duets and trio format. Although it is interested to see how porky he is compared to the earlier show from California! The band also has Richard Bona - not on bass but vocals! If you don't know him, he was described by Joe Zawinul as the best bassist he has ever worked with... (just a cryptic one there, to see if anyone picks up on it!).
Just shows the quality of the Metheny band when he can employ one of the world's greatest bassists on vocals! (and yes, he is a wonderful singer too!!)

Re: ok - convince me that 5.1 music videos can be great.

Hi Phil
That Petriccuani DVD is already in the post from lovefilm . I've got every album he ever created and never tire of him.
The only Jean Luc Ponty DVD on Lovefilm is this one.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meola-Jean-L.../dp/B0008FMHIK

ok - you've conviced me - I've added the Metheny one to my list

I'm also tempted by the Chick Corea Elektric band ones too, but I'm looking for reviews.

Any good 5.1 soul/funk DVDs? I've already got the Later DVDs.
