Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

I always prefered rock chicks to male fronted bands. My favourites were:

Warlock/Doro
Saraya
Femme Fatale
Lita Ford
Princess Pang
Lee Aaron

I know these are more rock than metal, but they're heavy enough for me.
Does anyone know of any heavier female fronted bands?

Cycle Sluts were a female fronted band and they were heavier than the above mentioned ones. How about Joan Jett?

I saw RATT at Donington in 84 and bought Invasion of your Privacy on the strength of it. I think i got fed up with it after the 3rd or 4th play. My cousin bought most of there CD's but i couldn't understand why. At that time they were one of the 'hair' bands along with Bon Jovi who were also on the bill. Metallica, Marillion and ZZ blew em away. Magnum were also on the bill as the start up band, they were better as well.

Try L7 Bricks are Heavy) and Sleater Kinney (The Woods). I saw SK live about a year ago and they did not disappoint.

Has anyone heard the new self-titled Suffocation album? If so is it worth buying?

I would certainly agree with you on Anthrax (one of my favourite thrash bands) and Alice in Chains. Not heard anything from Helmet and Tool though.

Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

Shameless plug alert: I'm selling a sealed version of Opeth's 'Ghost Reveries' Special Edition CD & DVD set over in the CD sales/trades forum. If you've got the album, there's loads of bonus features including DD & DTS 5.1 mixes and a 40 minute documentary to make this new edition worth your while. If you haven't got it, why not? Check it out.

That is all.

Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

WithAnR - you didn't list NIGHTWISH there!?!?!? Superb band! Tho I would say some people do have a hard time accepting the operatic vocals.... Within Temptation are very cool tho, and I liked Lacuna Coil's "Comalies", tho felt that "Karmacode" was a little lacklustre in comparrison....

TarPot - never quite "got" Tool.... Don't know why as I like progressive rock/metal, but I just never vibed from them.....

Paul - If I had Sky I would get that channel! But alas, I don't....

Floodedstatue - Used to be WELL into Opeth, and still listen to "Morningrise" now and again... Saw them live a couple of times - very tight!

I saw them last Sunday in Portsmouth and they blew me away! Played a good selection of stuff from across the albums, including The Night & Silent Water from Morningrise which was very special. Also classics such as When, Blackwater Park and Deliverance. Great gig

[QUOTE=dannius;3654842]Hi Paul,
I used to say I was a huge rock/metal fan, not the really heavy stuff generally but really into Guns n Roses, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater etc.

To be honest I've gone off Metallica ever since their black album. It went downhill from then on IMO

Bit late getting back to you on this - been on hols...

I actually played this quite a lot when it came out. Coverdales lyrics were a tad banal but vocally he sounded so like Plant. The whole album was more Led Zep than Whitesnake, to my ear.

One or two great tracks, several good ones - not heard it for a while so am gonna dig it out again...

Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

This is how I experienced it -

My first gig was Led Zeppelin in 1971 and then followed by every great band.
To me bands like Sabbath and Budgie were just HEAVY but the first real Heavy Metal band were Judas Priest with Sad Wings Of Destiny. Motorhead were just a rock n roll band and at their first gigs I remember loads of Teddy Boys but they were HEAVY rock n roll.
Up to the present I love Slayer, The Haunted, early Metallica, System Of A Down and I'm looking forward to The Answer on Dec 12th.
The greatest band of all time has got to be The Wildhearts.

Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

Opeth - Ghost reveries. Not sure about the 'growling' but the musics good.
Motorhead - Bomber. 180gram vinyl version. Only ever had it on tape, might as well take the plunge and get a good version!

The growling can take some getting used to, but it's clear and on the whole you can understand the lyrics. IMO it's an extension of the music, and adds to the mood and the whole Opeth package. Which includes the "good" [ <------- understatement] music!

Re: Any heavy metal fans out there?

Opeth - Ghost Reveries, excellent album!

I've put on my Xmas list:

Suffocation - Suffocation (2006)

Pyrexia - Sermon of Mockery (1993)

Novembers Doom (Any album apart from “Pale Haunt Departure” as I've already have that one), for example: Amid It's Hallowed Mirth (1995), Of Sculptured Ivy and Stone Flowers (1999), The Knowing (2000), To Welcome The Fade (2002), The Novella Reservior (2006)

Burzum - Det Som Engang Var (1992)

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (1993)

The Angels - Skin & Bone (1998)

Walter Trout - Deep Trout (2005)

I'm also a blues-rock fan too

errr..... Aces High wasn't an album, its the opening track off Powerslave; you've also left out Piece of Mind and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son - widely regarded as two of their greatest albums; and have also left out their excellent comeback album with Bruce, Brave New World.

Yes, the music is top drawer flooded. Which is why I took the plunge in the end. However, something tells I'll be restricted to 'playing it while the wifes out'. Just like my Roxy Music stuff. We play fair though, she likes Opera (male tenor) and some 'Christian rock' bands and she is banned (by the whole family ) from playing them outside her 'office'.

How are you getting on with the Sylvian stuff? I got the 'Stupid dream' DVD-A/CD re-master set recently, good, (and brilliantly recorded!) but not as good as the latest two.
