I like:

Genesis: Firth of Fith, Los Endos, all of The Lamb...
Yes: Roundabout, And You and I
Rush: Spirit of Radio
Jethro Tull: Too old to Rock and Roll, Hunting Girl

and not progressive at all but slipping in at end of 70's...the whole of Van Halen1....

Bo Hansen's Lord of The Rings album was great, an unexpected gem.
Nursery Chryme (is that spelt right?) - Genesis
Steve Hillage - Lunar music suite
Steve Hillage - Fish Rising
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time (not really "progressive" though)

Loads more in my vinyl collection, but all the nights locked up in my bedroom when I was younger have left me kind of unable to remember them. There was some great stuff by Gong, Genesis and Pink Floyd that leaned towards experimental though.

I love Tangerine Dream's Rubicon and the OST from Sorceror, too. A lot of Eno's albums like Music For Airports and Apollo are also great but I'm really stretching the "progressive" thing with them.
Steve Hackett's early solo albums were good, just after he left Genesis, Voyage Of The Acolyte was the first I think, that might be wrong though.

1. America - Yes
2. Pics at an Exhibition - ELP
3. Journey to the Centre of the Earth - Wakeman
4. Topographic Oceans/ Ritual - Yes
5. Echoes - Floyd
6. Musical Box - Genesis
7. Hold your head up - Argent (long version)

Does Roxy Music count? cos I want "Ladytron" and "If there is something" if I can.

Damn damn damn. Loads os films to watch and now I've got the urge to dust off a few CD's that haven't had a spin for a long while.

Lucky it's raining

Pre - Dance Away Roxy Music counts beyond question. The early albums and performances on The Old Grey Whistle Test were progressive and stunning, but then it all went a bit Sad(e).

I'd forgotten about that one. I'll have to buy a turntable to play it again.

Can somebody explain to me what a "70s progressive track" is please?

Between this thread and the "Dance belongs to mom and pop" thread, I'm feeling rather confused

Damn fine question.....

Guess it's songs which are longer than 3 minutes, that address bigger issues than boy meets girl and that were released in the 70's.

Most prog rock is actually heavy..10 minute long stuff...

Thanks Gordon

That includes quite a lot!

I'll go for Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells then. You can't get longer than that (even if you only include one of the two parts) and it was released in 1973 No lyrics really (apart from the gibberish near the end) but I'm sure that subconsciously Mr Oldfield was trying to address broader issues than just boy meets girl

I think the term also rather implies a lyric of an unusually depth with a meaningful structure and symbolism , delivered seriously with the lead singer's head waaaaay up his own backside, suffering for his art.

Well that's Yes anyway

I do love Pink Floyd too. But I couldn't pick just one.

Seeing as Tubular Bells has no lyrics, I'll go for the Queen one as my favourite

Blues flavoured Rock 'n' Roll.
Can't describe it more accurately, but I wouldn't say it was progressive style.
The Edgar Winter Group, made some fine tracks, most omnipresent at the time was of course, Frankenstein.

Dylan was tops.
I used to rush home from school to catch The Magic Roundabout, but although John Wesley Harding and Highway 61 Revisited, were enjoying radio success, Bob just seemed to wander fairly aimlessly around with his guitar, before Zebedee announced "Time For Bed".
I always longed for " Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Those Memphis Blues Again", but had to make do with Jenny Handley on Magpie instead.

But seriously. If Dylan is "allowed" under progressive then the "new Dylan" must get a mention

Blinded by the Light - Springsteen

Never before had anyone squeezed so many words into so small a space.

New album due soon. Can't wait. Best live band EVER.
