Robert Plant - Vocals
Jimmy Page - Guitar
Roger Glover - Bass
Jon Lord - Keyboards
Jon Bonham - Drums

I'd call the band Purple Zeppelin. I was thinking of having twin guitars and putting Ritchie in there as well, but I suspect it would end in a fight on stage... !

Man, this band would ROCK !!

Cool idea for a thread

Jeff Buckley - Vocals
Jimi Hendrix - Lead Guitar
Keith Richards - Rythm Guitar
Flea - Bass
John Bonham - Drums

They would probably sound terrible as trying to get Jimi and Keith to play together while Flea was getting all funky in the backround would be next to impossible It would be worth a try though.

prince - vocals/guitar/keys/etc
stevie wonder - keyboards
herbie hancock - 2nd keys
carlos santana - guitar
jimi hendrix - 2nd guitar
larry graham - bass
billy cobham - drums
miles davis - horn
john coltraine - saxaphone
aretha franklin - backing vocals
marvin gaye - backing vocals
isaac hayes - backing vocals
al green - backing vocals

i think not only would this be the funkiest band ever, but they could also rock out, plus get jazzy or soulful. in fact with some of the greatest musicians who ever lived, this could be technically the greatest band you could put together. of course you could add more and more great guitarists etc to your band, but you know the phrase too many cooks spoil the broth, and some of the best bands were only 4 peice, like beatles, floyd, zep, who, u2, etc

most of the musicians listed above have worked with at least one or two of the others, and are influenced by others, and have in turn influenced others there, so i think if it was possible to put together a band like that, they would all gel and work well together. jimi hendrix asked larry graham (sly and family stone) to be his bassist, he was going to work with miles before he died, miles worked with coltrane and prince, who also worked with aretha, larry, stevie w, santana (and god knows who else), santana worked with a bunch of them, including larry graham. many people would say either hendrix or santana were the greatest guitarists ever, and the styles are similar, and of course prince's guitar style is very similar also, and billy cobham is reckoned by many to be the greatest drummer ever, and larry graham the greatest bass player ever (ie. ask bootsy collins, flea or victor wootang - the dude invented funk slap bass).

for backing vocals, we have arguably the four greatest soul vocalists, covering a wide octave range, which would suit princes wide range. isaac and marvin can also help out on keyboards, as stevie wonder can play most intruments himself, but with herbie on backup keys you wouldn't really need anything more

this is a band that could just jam and improvise, as well as play pretty much any classic rock/pop/funk/soul/jazz track as well as it could possibly sound

only hendrix, coltraine and marvin gaye are dead. you could replace coltraine with maceo parker (ex james brown sax), and the band would be realistic and possible, and just as much as good

i was in the studio once with terry lewis, prince, morris day, and the rest of the time (not jimmy jam tho). very mindblowing experience talking about music and movies for a couple of hours after seeing eryka badu (this was 4am-6am at paisley park). george clinton was onstage with prince, terry and the time jamming the night before. very cool to meet the godfather of funk, and realise he was shorter than me (i'm about 5'7), and not about 6 foot 4 like i'd imagined

Great stuff mate - I'm a bit envious. Jimmy & Terry made so many great tunes in the 80's. I read somewhere that they didn't make it to a gig with Prince (due to being snowed in), so they sat in the studio writing with the SOS Band - and the rest is history. Jesus! - George Clinton was there too - lucky fella

thats partly the story, but here's the truth...

as the tour went on the time became more popular with the audiences, which made prince jealous. jam and lewis were also in demand for producing and writing, which also made prince jealous (to say he is a jealous guy is like saying the pope is interested in religeon). during a short break in the tour jam and lewis flew to produce the SOS band's album, to fly back in time for the next show. unfortunately just like in the lyrics to the infamous outtake old friends 4 sale - "two friends of mine got stuck in the snow" and the plane couldn't take off to get them back in time.

morris day, the lead singer of the time, asked prince what he would do if he was in his shoes, and prince said "fire em", as on top of being a jealous guy, he likes to fire as much as charlton heston. so morris, and not prince, fired em. they then had dozens and dozens of hit singles for various artists, such as producing control and rhythmn nation for janet jackson, and hearsay by alexander o neal, etc, which just made prince and morris more jealous. they did reform for the canned corportate world album, which after changes became the pandemonium album, and they appeared in the graffiti bridge movie (and probably wished they never bothered!)

funny thing was, when i was in the studio with them, prince was trying to tell terry not to make music with rappers who cuss, for morris to tell prince, but you wrote irresitable bitch, darling nikki, head and sexy mf. i'd never ever seen anyone backchat to prince before. he replied, but i don't do that anymore, and morris said, but you still make the money from it!

Good old Prince Cheers for that, interesting stuff.
I check in on the Flyte Tyme website everynow & then, but, to be fair, i don't rate todays 'R&B'/Soul - i just appreciate their production abilities.
They had their own style of making tunes & were instantly recognisable by Jimmys Drum & Keyboard work & Terrys percussion stuff
I've lost count of how many great pieces of music they made.
Around that time, They were amongst an unbelievably talented group of producers/writers.

terry lewis played bass actually. it was jellybean johnson that played drums (he also plays guitar but not in the time - he did the guitar on black cat by janet jackson), not to be confused with jesse johnson the guitarist. jellybean is a really nice guy. i hung out at bunkers when st paul was playing (he was the "keyboard player" to replace jimmy jam in purple rain, and he sang lead vox on the original version of nothing compares to you) with jellybean, and they played one of my mix cds between sets. btw, on the first 3 time albums, prince plays all the instruments apart from morris day who plays drums and does lead vox. the backing vox is all prince (yup the girly voices). the real time never actually comitted anything to tape, so unless you've heard them live, you've never really heard them after all! i presume you know alexander o neal was the original vocalist for the flyte time

Sure, I knew of Alex/Flyte Tyme - Did Prince get the hump with him as well?
I know Jellybean worked with J&L outside of 'The Time'
I think on Alex's debut album, he done a bit of guitar work (i think - not 100%)
I haven't heard any LIVE stuff from The Time, so, that's another interesting little story
Just goes to show just how outrageously talented Prince is.

alex left flyte tyme before prince got involved with them, and the time were big before alex got big (mainly due to jam and lewis). hearsay is almost a time album with alex on lead vox. prince did have a dig by crediting sheena eastons sugar walls to "alexander nevermind"

the time are an excellent live band, they keep on touring america. hopefully one day prince will bring them on as support in the uk, along with sheila e. they supported prince on a few odd unnanounced dates on his massive usa 2004 tour, i saw em do that in MPLS, thier biggest ever hometown gig, and then after the show there was the aftershow at paisley park, and the guys were hanging where i was at paisley. they will stop and chat to fans and tell cool stories and stuff. morris and jerome in real life act just like they do in the movie (when the wives are at home of course ). they've all worked with the biggest artists, so some of the stories are amazing.

Monte Moir did some tunes for Alec's self titled debut album, have you met him?
I've never really investigated 'The Time' with all that much depth - weird, considering my liking for J&L. I have heard a few of their 'released' tunes, which i liked. Saw a couple of their CD's down my local (MEGA) shopping centre (Ice Cream Castles, Time & What Time Is It) but, as yet, not picked anything up.

i've not actually spoken to monte apart from saying hi, but he was in the studio with the time and prince, and at the aftershow in 2004 he was standing next to me when we were watching the band on stage. monte is the guy who you would never imagine to be in a band in a month of sundays. i didn't realise it was him at first as he didn't have the suit on. he is a very quiet guy normally, but he will talk at length if you speak to him. he's one the guys who let's slip the odd snippet of prince info now and again. i know a few people who talk to him regularly, and he loves to tell stories, as do a few of prince's associates. those 3 time albums you mention are essential funk btw, and usually hard to get on cd, so snap em up, you won't be dissapointed. they show what prince can be like if he drops all the BS and just gets funky

Monte has done some great stuff - a particular favourite of mine is a tune called 'Only A breath Away' by Patti Austin (Getting Away With Murder album), which also has a couple of J&L tracks on it, inc 'The Heat Of Heat' - class tune!!!!
I will have to pick up those Time albums when i am down there next.
This has jogged my memory to get them.

Good job we haven't taken this thread too far off track
