What annoys me most about Pulse is the sound quality...
It's clear from the std. 448Kbps DD track that the underlying sound quality is excellent, and that a lot of care has been taken with the mix, and placement of subtle sounds all round the room...
However, as is usual for DD, when the going gets tough the sound gets muddled and strangled. Now for PF, this is often not as bad as it could be as much of the music is gentle and atmospheric which lends itself better to the lower bandwidth.
As for the 640Kbps option, I'm annoyed because my player won't play it, but I'm even more annoyed that they bothered with it at all. Despite the fact that some players do cope with it, it is OUTSIDE the official DVD specs... The maximum supported DD rate on DVD is 448kbps, period. What on earth is the point of releasing a DVD with an out of spec sound track????
Now if the benefit was a huge leap in bitrate you could sort of justify it, but it's only 640Kbps....
What is the point!!!! 640Kbps will help a bit but won't make a huge difference. It SHOULD have been released with a DTS track instead, and preferably a DTS 24/96 one at that which would give a bitrate of 1.5Mbps... That would have made a huge difference over the standard 640Kbps track and more importantly is WITHIN the DVD specification...
Absolute bonkers. It's strangulated what should be astonishing sound into merely great in places not so great when things get busy. Very, very disappointing especially after the brillance of the DSOTM SACD. Compounded by the fact that clearly the quality of the sound master tapes are not lacking in any way shape or form, unlike the video, which while not dreadful, does highlight the lack of quality you get from video sources... A bit more bitrate there might have helped a little...
I guess you need something like a DVDO VP30 with ABT102D to get a decent picture out of it!!
