Pink Floyd - Pulse

Hi, I noticed on the set up menu on the pulse dvd regarding rear speaker angles it suggests to put them instead of the usual 110 degrees you should put them at 135 degrees. Now is this because pulse was recorded and mixed in q sound or are we possibly looking at a new rear speaker angle placement here??I have moved them as suggested and find the sound is better all round,I would also have to say i own a lot of the best sounding concert dvd's already inc roger waters in the flesh and pulse is the best yet i have heard especially listening at reference level.Demo disc most definately.

Anyone else got any views on the rear speaker angle placement??

Regards

Brian

oh it's nice, but there being a higher bitrate [that you cannot hear] makes it a bit of a pain

I have a Sammy HD-945 & a Sony STRDB790 & everything plays nicely for me.

I can even notice the quality difference between each 5.1 track. (normally my ears are full of rubbish)

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 640kbs stream played through my Xbox 360 and my Yamaha RX-V357 . Hopefully my newly bought Panny EX75 DVD recorder will be able to process it as well.

I have the above and can play the 640 kbps and the 448 kbps versions. However the Naim AV2 processor switches to Auto 3:2:1 in 448 but in 640 there is no auto option and no ability to play in 3:2:1. My DVD player is Pioneer 757.

Is my DVD player simply too old or is it the AV2.

Thanks in advance.

Guess it's the Pioneer then.

Anyone know what the DVD player is supposed to have which makes playback possible.

How ever my Pioneer DVR-630H do not play the 640kbps, it just outputs silence.

My Pioneer 565A plays the higher bitrate fine, too. It's going into a Yamaha DSP-E800.

What annoys me most about Pulse is the sound quality...

It's clear from the std. 448Kbps DD track that the underlying sound quality is excellent, and that a lot of care has been taken with the mix, and placement of subtle sounds all round the room...

However, as is usual for DD, when the going gets tough the sound gets muddled and strangled. Now for PF, this is often not as bad as it could be as much of the music is gentle and atmospheric which lends itself better to the lower bandwidth.

As for the 640Kbps option, I'm annoyed because my player won't play it, but I'm even more annoyed that they bothered with it at all. Despite the fact that some players do cope with it, it is OUTSIDE the official DVD specs... The maximum supported DD rate on DVD is 448kbps, period. What on earth is the point of releasing a DVD with an out of spec sound track????

Now if the benefit was a huge leap in bitrate you could sort of justify it, but it's only 640Kbps....
What is the point!!!! 640Kbps will help a bit but won't make a huge difference. It SHOULD have been released with a DTS track instead, and preferably a DTS 24/96 one at that which would give a bitrate of 1.5Mbps... That would have made a huge difference over the standard 640Kbps track and more importantly is WITHIN the DVD specification...

Absolute bonkers. It's strangulated what should be astonishing sound into merely great in places not so great when things get busy. Very, very disappointing especially after the brillance of the DSOTM SACD. Compounded by the fact that clearly the quality of the sound master tapes are not lacking in any way shape or form, unlike the video, which while not dreadful, does highlight the lack of quality you get from video sources... A bit more bitrate there might have helped a little...

I guess you need something like a DVDO VP30 with ABT102D to get a decent picture out of it!!

I agree about the sound, i think the 640 is pointless... i also find that i have to really crank the amp up to get this LOUD!... as its very quite compared to any of my other dvds..

I think also the pic quality is bloody awful... i MEAN AWFUL! couldnt they have cleaned the pic quality a bit... its banded gradiants and grainy screen is really annoying.. I have a vcd which is equal on quality and sound. I think i may send my back as im not impressed at all

I really noticed the difference with the 640K track, much louder and more immersive. It plays fine on my Yahama RX-657.

I agree on the picture though. Truly awful, looks like one of those dodgy Russian DVD's that are just a copy from video or Laserdisk. I did at least get into widescreen with Theatertek.

As far as the concert goes, I prefered Delicate Sound Of Thunder. I thought the two big highlights of that are The Great Gig in the Sky and Comfortably Numb (best performance of this ever). The versions on Pulse are both less good IMHO. The big floating glitter ball thingy at the end is pretty cool though as is having the whole of Dark Side on there.

Whats with the backing singers on Pulse? For the first half they look like really badly dressed bridesmaids and they keep looking like they are having a fit.

Maybe its just because the backing singers on Delicate Sound of Thunder are nicer is why I prefer it

I don't think that quality is that bad when you consider it was shot ten years ago and under pretty tough conditions for image capture.

Longer range shots of the stage don't look great, but the closeups are pretty decent quality. When you're trying to shoot in darkness punctuated by extremely bright flashes of light you are bound to get problems.
