most of the music came first, altho he worked on both at the same time. they started preparing for the movie in may 83, originally called "dreams", there was a live show at first avenue in august 83 where live versions of most of the songs were performed, and the backing tracks provided the basis for the versions on the album, including the song purple rain (altho prince actually redubbed most of the parts that weren't played by himself - the whole album is pretty much prince playing everything), more songs were recorded in august, casting done in september, script rewritten in october, and more songs recorded, shooting in november in mpls, a test pressing of the album was done in november, more shooting and music in december, he started workin on his next album in jan 84, the purple rain album completed in april 84 and the album and movie released in june 84. the whole movie was shot in about 21 days in the middle of winter

in between all this, his 1999 album was still in the charts in 83 and he was releasing singles, he recorded protoge albums for other people like sheila e, the time, appolonia, and recorded his follow up album around the world in a day. around that time he usually finished at least one album before the next one was out, and also has umpteen videos for songs that no-one has ever heard

his follow up movie under the cherry moon was shot in colour, altho released in black and white

Aside from the traditional orchestrated soundtracks associated with the "Western & War Film" and the song based "Stage Musicals & Rock Sound Track" type of movie, my personal favourites are "Local Hero - Mark Knopfler", "Educating Rita - David Hentschel" and "Southern Comfort - Ry Cooder".
The "Going Home - Theme of the Local Hero", is particularly uplifting finale to a film.

Been listening to the 'Wonderland' on repeat in the car over the last week after it lay in my house for about 18 months.

Forgot how good it was - really captures the 80s and the era of John Holmes.

Wow, old post! Anyway soundtracks that do it for me include 'Sunshine', 'Dark Knight', 'Monsters Ball' and most recently I thought the 'District 9' soundtrack was amazing.

Re: Favorite OSTs

Donnie Darko - the 80's music that I remember.
Charlie's Angels - (OK not ) but I love every bit of music played in it.
Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - What would this film be without the songs?

Re: Favorite OSTs

There's several sorts and I think it is unfair to compare them :-
  • The compilation of pre-released songs (Pulp Fiction etc)
  • The original soundtrack/Score (star wars, jurassic park, Dollars trilogy etc)
  • The mix of the 2 above (Shallow Grave, Hardware etc)
  • Musicals (Sound of Music etc)
My personal favourites are...

Hardware
Once Upon a Time in the West,
The Good The Bad & the Ugly
Pulp Fiction
Resevoir Dogs

Either way, a a good soundtrack can really make a film, I think The Usual Suspects has a good score, but I doubt it would make a good CD.

I still adore the Star Wars soundtracks. In many ways they are the dialogue of the films (Lucas himself said the films are essentially silent movies and you could easily watch them with just William's score); Revenge Of The Sith is especially affecting but they all have wonderful moments (Empire Strikes Back is chock full of them).

I also think the score for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (unavailable as no isolated score was ever recorded) is the best score for a horror film ever composed.

And anything by ol' Ennio will do fine by me, whether it's The Good, The Bad And The Ugly or Once Upon A Time In The West, he always delivers.

Is is one of his better albums IMHO - check out his OST for "Blow Up" which has got "Bring Down the Birds" on it (used by Dee-Lite for "Groove is in the Heart").

Personally, I think that the 'compilation' soundtracks to me are a bit of a cheat unless the tracks were specially recorded.

My other favourites include:

Sorcerer - Tangerine Dream at their best. Friedkin choreographed some of the scenes around the music so images / music lock together beautifully.

Up All Night - Obscure 60s British film featuring Patrick McGoohan as an aspiring jazz drummer. Some great stuff from tubby Hayes on it.

Dirty Harry - Very atmospheric, a bit funky.

Get Carter - Some cheesy moments but the main theme is as funky as f*** and tracks like "Hallucinations" are choc-a-block with atmosphere.

Aguirre Wrath of God - Some beautiful playing from Popol Vuh. The opening scene as they descend the mountainside and the main theme is played on 'Choir Organ' is breathtaking.

Carnage Visors - A 30 minute moody workout by the Cure.

i love the blow up movie and have the cd and dvd but the soundtrack on it's on apart from bits and bobs doesn't work too well

deathwish is another good one, as is get carter and the italian job

up all night strangely reminds me of in the heat of the night, i think they were on the same label when reissued on cd (RKO)
